In my dorm i'm only allotted 1 lan port and that is registered to my laptop. I cant hook my ps3 up directly to it cuz its registered to my computer. I talked to the IT guys and they said you're not even allowed to play online in the dorms which is bull. I was wondering how i could get around this. I go to PSU if that helps.

Can you not just connect a router or a hub to the LAN - how would they know you had two devices running. Or use Internet Connection Sharing through your laptop.

I work at the computer center at my school. What we do here is register Mac Address for each game systems. If your schoo does it like the way you explained, then no game systems are allowed to go online....

This is what the email said.

"The connection agreement for the residence halls, which you agreed to by signing up for a connection, states that you are not permitted to put anything on the network other than your one registered computer. It also explicitly states that gaming consoles are not permitted on the network. If you try putting in your current IP information, your connection will still not work for the ps3 because the ethernet address of it does not match the one of your laptop, which is registered. There are also no ways of getting around the university firewalls in any way, as they are hardware filters."

I wanna know if it is even possible and if they would even be able to find out.

Just throwing out ideas here, but you might be able to get a wi-fi dongle, such as Wi-Fie Max, and hook it up to your laptop--then connect your PS3 through the wireless network.

Chances are, this still won't work, but it's worth a shot.

Try setting up your PS3 through a proxy through your computer or laptop. If they have it set up to filter out any other IP address, than you should be able to set up a proxy on ur computer and connect your PS3 to that.. I Dont think they will be able to see the PS3 connected to your laptop.. might see alot of activity on your computer though and wonder what you are doing..

your bandwidth problem is your own issue and you would have to deal with that, but i think everyone here seems to be forgetting a very simple way to get around this. If you were to purchase any linksys router (even a wireless one which would work perfect with your ps3) you can have the router clone the mac ID of your computer and then you can get around that issue of the network not getting the right mac address. Just get your mac ID off your computer, put that in the linksys option as the mac address you want to clone, and then you are set. You can connect other computers wired, or wirelessly to your network via your router and they will all be able to connect since the router is cloning the mac address that the network allows.
