Sorry for asking what probably is an obvious question, but I got different answers from different sources, so I'm hoping I could get a definitive answer here.
My friend has a PS3 bought from the US and is planning to buy Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 from the UK, will that work or is the PS3 region-locked?

PS3 games are, in general, region free.
Its up to the developers wether they slap region coding into their product.
PS3 BD movies are region coded, so a movie from the states wont work on a european console, BD player etc.

same here. i just played the FIFA 08 demo and it blows. I want to buy the PE 08 from the UK and play it on my US PS3. I hope it'll work

I have a question, just checked a couple of old games from jap, I have my PS3 and I wanted to know, can I play those jap games on the PS3, do I have to verify if they are encoded or no? is there a software an upgrade, or something that can make region free for games?

I dont think so, if your talking about old PS2 games they wont work, all PS2 games are region coded.
And theres no way (as of yet) to play them.
Although i have heard that swap magic works.

I have heard that with Firmware 1.90 you have an iso loader to run these old PS2 versions on the computer without the problem of the region, dont know...

you can play each and every game from anywhere in the world on your PS3 beacuse it is region free.
I will be getting Pro evolution 2008 on the ps3 from the UK and it will undoubtedly work.
No matter what anyone says the PS3 is region free the PS3 is region free the PS3 is region free the PS3 is region free the PS3 is region free the PS3 is region free the PS3 is region free the PS3 is region free.
ohh and blu ray movies have the following region coding
Region Code A : North America, Central America, South America, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
Region Code B : Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Region Code C : India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mainland China, Pakistan, Russia, Central and South Asia.

Of course it is, but its up to the developers of the games if they want to slap region coding on them.
So in away, your giving false pretenses, it may vary from one game to the next.
Best bet is to look up the net and see if the game your going to purchase has infact got region coding on it, just because the PS3 is region free, dont mean the games are.

it is up to the developer but just barely,
no game released so far has region coding and it will not have any region coding.This was one of the key advantages of the ps3 and was confirmed by Phil Harrison.

What about the online aspect of games though - are they region free? What servers do you connect to on different region games? Will this cause lag if you connect to distance servers?
Any ideas?

Not sure, my broadband is capped, so i dont get alot of online play.
Not sure about it... Motorstorm, at the beginning, didnt allow european and Canadian/American gamers play each other online, not sure if thats changed.
Yet again its up to the dev,s.

man it is not up to the devs
A Pal PS3 will connect to the European network,this can be confirmed that when you go online in motorstorm you get a choice of rooms which are english speaking,Italian speaking,Portuguese speaking,etc.
But when you go online with a US PS3 then there is only 1 english speaking room.
The server which you connect to depends on your PS3 not the devs

Of course it connects, thats not what where talking about....
PAL and NTSC Motorstorm users could not (at the begining) play each other online, understand now?
Therefore a simple update for the game is required, who releases that... the dev,s.

man the game will probably be region free, but you'll need an hdtv to paly it, standard tv does't suport pal, ps3 will read the game, but tv wont unless you have 720p or so.

Thats not true most standard tvs less than about 5 years old support all regions.

That's true, however NTSC PS3's can only output an NTSC or HD image, even on an NTSC TV playing pal games at NTSC resolution will give image corruption. And Vice Versa for PAL PS3's.

Dude the corruption if there was any would be barely noticeable.
My brother has a 50inch HD TV and a NTSC PS3 and there is absolutley NO corruption what so ever.
Also WHY are people convinced that the PS3 is region free.

That's because it's a HD TV so the PS3 outputs an HD image which all games are compatible with. What I was getting at is that, playing PAL games on an NTSC PS3 at NTSC resolutions (as opposed to HD as NTSC PS3's will only output NTSC or HD) you will get image problems.
I work for Sony, on the european playstation careline and yes PS3's are NOT region locked however only games published by sony and it's associated publishers, Namco and Psygnosis are guarenteed to be region free other publishers can put region locking on their games if they wish. All movies are region locked.

Dude dont take tis the wrong way but PS3s ARE region locked,its the PS3 games which are NOT region locked,if PS3s were region free,they would play PS1/PS2 games,Blu-Rays and DVDs from all over the world,the PS3 cannot do this,so obviously they ARE region locked.

No the region locking is on the disk it always has been all the consoles have is a check to see if it's an original or a copy.

Dude the PS3 is not region free,if it was region free people in the UK would be able to play American PS1/PS2 games,American DVDs and American Blu-Rays they cannot do this.
Maybe i should give examples.
A region locked DVD player only plays DVDs from one region,if a certain code is put into the player it becomes region free meaning this has nothing to do with a disc.
A PS2 is region locked but when the hardware is modded it can play from all regions,again having nothing to do with the disc.
IF the PS3 is region free then i should be able to play the PS2 games that i buy from America,but i cant meaning that the PS3 is not region free.
EDIT
Perhaps we are both right.There is region locking on the disc(PS1/PS2,DVD,Blu-Ray)but if the PS3 was region free then the lock on the disc wouldnt matter.
