I dont have a ps3 yet but I definately getting one very soon, but one thing bothers me, I have not been able to set up a router on my pc even with my ISP helping me. MUST you have a router to connect your ps3 to the internet? Im new to all this network stuff so any help would be appreciated. I was thinking can you put a cable from your pc or modem to the ps3? or is it wireless?
Even if I could put a cable from my ps3 to my pc, I only have 1 lan port which the computer uses. I dont want to miss out on the benefits of having a ps3 online, so if any one could help me please I would be thankful.
Thanks.

To get online with your ps3 and pc your going to need a router. If you dont't mind switching around you can plug your ps3 straight into your router but if you ever need both at the same time your screwed without a router. What kind of router do you have? Who's your ISP?

Do you need a router? Can you not just use Internet Connection Sharing in Windows?

Would still need a second network card.
Does your PC have more than one LAN port? network cards are probably cheaper than buying a router. Or you could just go all out and get a wireless router with a wired port, then when you get a ps3 you should be all setup for it to use wireless while you PC is wired.

First though post damn near all your routers settings that you've been told by your ISP to use, that doesnt work for you. After setting up my network, which is complex as hell, I've got a relatively good understanding of how all this stuff works even to the point of hacking my router to add extra features. Its a cheapo one that some ISP's "give away", so it was one of bare minimum features.

EDIT: Also post things like the make/model numbers of your modem and router, and any other data that might be relevant.

I don't see why you couldn't? I suggest just trying it and see if it works.

Use the exact same settings that you use for your PC and you shouldnt have any problems.

Believe there is an ethernet port right on the back of the PS3 itself. So if you have an ethernet connection just connect your modem directly to your PS3? I havent tried this cause my modem is way to far away but Im sure it would work. But you would have to keep switching the ethernet cable back to your computer any time you wanted get online on your pc. Thats why a router would be ideal, if you could just figure out why your isp doesnt let you use one.

The system itself seems to be very user friendly when trying to find the internet. It recognized my wireless router right away, and all I had to do was enter the password and was online :)

Yes, you can. Just like the others have already said, it'll work like a charm if you plug straight into the modem. However, my problem was that the modem is in the basement and my PS3 is 2 floors up. That wasn't going to work.

But because I have a wireless network in my house, I bought the wireless game adapter for the PS3 (I have the extinct 20 GB, but upgraded to 120 GB) and I've been online with the PS3 ever since (including downloading game demos that I don't even play lol).
