Also here, this guy has 6 drives in this listing. It looks like one of them is a GDR-8161b. If you ask, he will probably send you that one.

Good news!

I saw the 8082N drives were selling pretty cheap on eBay so I bought two of them for about $14 each shipped. I personally confirmed that firmware version 0007 works. You can use these in laptops or desktops with an adapter. The desktop JAE to IDE adapters are selling for about $5 shipped on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350006158301

The drives I tested worked in PIO mode only. When in DMA mode Rawdump would recognize the disc, but then immediately stop with an unhandled exception error; "An attempt was made to move the file pointer before the beginning of the file." Switching to PIO mode results in it working flawlessly. Decent dump speed too - faster than 8164 and 8163.

Drives tested: HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8082N0007 - 2040MB/hr

This may be a stupid question, but I'm new. But what is PIO mode?

Thanks in advance!

PIO is an alternate to DMA mode for your IDE controllers. Just go into your device manager, hit the '+' next to the IDE Controllers, open the primary or secondary controller (whichever one your drive is connected to), and you can change the mode in there. You would only try this if you were having problems. I hope that helps. :)

Thanks! I ordered mine, I hopefully can get it working. I installed my Wiikey already, but I haven't had any games to test it with. Thanks again!

On much the same note, I wonder if it's these megaloot fools that started the rumor to begin with since they have 498 8160s in inventory! And, check out their email to me when I asked for confirmation if the 8160s had been tested to rip with Rawdump and what the firmware version was:

"it has been verifed...it works 100% without any failure...its usb ..it uses one of the GDR firmware...i can not tell you wish firmware it is...but i assure you that it works...we have done it many times...if u need more pictures or even a video..let me know as i can provide that for you" - megaloot4u

Hmmm...
Dude, I'm telling you these guys are full of it. Wiible was probably a shill. I opened up the 8160 and compared it to the 8161 and 8162 and the 8160 uses a completely different controller chip. Granted, they all use a Panasonic IC, but it has a different part number than the 8161 and 8162. I photoed them if you would care to see.

Anyway, my PayPal is mig17@optonline.net. May I please have an additional $6 to cover the shipping? I am not looking to make money on these drives, I just want to cover my costs because I cannot use them.
Yes, post any images you have that would be helpful.

Ok, can you PM me or list the exact 8160 drives you have. If I buy them to try flashing and testing them for everyone I want them to at least be different. 3 of the same would not be too helpful. Please give me the following:

1. Brand, i.e. Compaq, HP, H-L Data Storage, etc.
2. Model, i.e. GDR-8160B, GDR-8160BB, etc.
3. Revision, i.e. A0, A3, etc.
4. Firmware, i.e. 0012, 0009, etc.
5. Manufacture date.

Thank you. $36 is fine just want to make sure exactly what I'm going to have to play with...

Hi. They are all H-L Data, but honestly the brand does not really matter. All of these drives are part of the Hitachi/LG alliance. The revisions are A0, A1, and A2. I will send you the photos when I get home. I am traveling for the holiday. I do not know when I will have time to get them all hooked up again to get you firmware revisions, but I will try when I get back. I will also have manufacture dates when I get back (I think they were all made in 2002).

HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8161B0042 working fine and dandy here at a little over 2000MB/hour, taking roughly 2h 20m to rip.

Thanks Thomo17, I updated the 2nd post in thread. If you take a look, so far it looks like the higher the firmware, the faster the rip on the 8161s.

Was that running at Ultra DMA 2?

Anyone try updating the 8161B to the latest official 0102 firmware at http://us.lgservice.com yet? I'm of the mindset that if it's not broke, don't fix it, but if anyone has tried it please post your results with the new firmware. On the site it states that it's supposed to improve readability.

Well yeah. This thread will show up if you Google any of this stuff. Of course people are going to copy information. Why would you be even a little surprised?

Hi, I see that theres been a lot of post regarding my website on this page. Especially from UOU.....I see that you are well knowledge on this subject and wanted to see if I can provide you each one of our drives so you can sample them including the several different GDR- models I carry so we can finally see which drives work and dont work for the rawdump. As for this WiiMan guy, I don't exactly know who this is. I believe I got one of your ebay messages but I deleted after I replied so I dont know your email. PM or email me sales@megaloot4u.com so I can send you out all the samples.
Thank you

Yes that was running Ultra DMA 2.

It seems to depend a little on the games too, it seems with my particular model as i currently write this, ripping my copy of Mario Party 8 and it is doing so at an avg of 2190MB/ hour, where as Big Brain academy which was the game i ripped with my original post just struggled over 2000!

Hey, I've been looking through the forums and tried everything i can to backing up the games:

-I used the FriiDump to rip the game(which worked... although i didn't have a compatible burner :S).

-Have tried to use burn it of, but failed, both through the ISO created with the Friidump and using the RAW file from the program and unscrambling it... Nothing worked

I've decided to get a compatible burner, but i havent got the knowledge to find it(unless i get it of EBAY using the link by UOU in the "DVD Drives for Wii & Gamecube Backups" section).

i wanted to know whether someone can tell me if any of the following burners are compatible... because i cant find the details for them:
[pic below is a price list of a store called MSY near me]

Thanks in advance ....

ANY burner should work. It's usually an issue with the media you're burning on rather than the drive you're burning with.

Try some nicer discs.... People have had good luck with Verbatim + and -R discs.

Thanks... i'm considering the Pioneer 112D, should that be good for "backing up" original Wii Discs? or are there better ones (on the list, or personal favourites...

It does not matter what burner you use, as long as it works well. I use an old Lite-On 1633S that I got free after rebate about 4 years ago. What's more important is the blank media. Low quality media usually gives low quality burns no matter what drive you use.

Here are the top five DVD writers though:

1 Samsung SH-S203B
2 Pioneer DVR-112D
3 LG GSA-H62N
4 Pioneer DVR-112
5 Lite-On LH-20A1P

Ok, I know it's been said that there is no such thing as a stupid question. But there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots. I really wish people would at least make an attempt at reading before posting. There are 8 pages in this thread and on almost EVERY one of them people have said that ALL BURNERS WILL BURN THE ISO IMAGES WHEN USING GOOD MEDIA!!! It's been posted time and time again which drives work for reading, and that ALL of them work for burning. People please quit asking if your drive(s) will work. I check these forums every day and I get tired of scrolling through questions like this.

It seems that i have maybe worded by question a little unclear,
Im trying to see whether if any of the burners on the list will allow me to RIP the Wii Disc's, im familiar with burning the iso's, all i need is a burner that'll allow me to rip the original Wii discs...

Sorry if my previous posts were unclear...
