update,

to clarify used the wiikey setup disk and changed the dvd read speed to 6 speed, i may have set the multiregion compatibility on as well.

since saving the settings no backups witll work, originals play fine.

I have tried 2 different writers and around 10 different types of disc at various speeds including 1x, 2.4, 2 and 4 i think.

I have tried the recovery disc, burning using the gcos creation method and it will not read the disc i just get the unabel to read the disc refer to manual.

any help would be appreciated.

I was going to buy another wiikey and replace the one in there so the 3x and region is back to default.

thats the only way forward i can think of now !.

I never "flashed" my wii after the wiikey was installed. Is there any reason to do so now?
There's a wonderful saying - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If yours is working as you'd like and you have no problems with it, there's no real reason to upgrade it. The shipped firmware version is more than adequate to run most things. However, backups of the new Super Mario Galaxy won't run at present and WiiKey are releasing another update for this. I would recommend leaving any updates until this is released.

What firmware version is on the chip? If it's 1.9b, are you running the 1.3 config disk?

Are you at least seeing the Gamecube logo when you insert the configuration or firmware update disk? If this isn't even happening, I'm almost sure it's not been installed correctly. If you can, get a photo of the install and upload it somewhere - I'll take a look.

its all been working fine for over 6 months.

i just thought i would update the firmware like you do.

or don't if this happens.

I am in the process of trying another verbatim 16x disk for the config 1.3 disk.

all originals work still.

I would rarther not have to open the wii up again unless i really have to.

tried the 1.3 setup disk.

I don't get the gamecube logo, insert the disc, wait for the menu or press a screen tried both and press the reset key.

resets's, press A, spinning disc in top right click on on disk it spins and then says unable to read disc.

I think it maybe time for a new wiikey...

I would check your soldering - it's possible something has come loose.

I'm still ticked off that Metroid Prime 3 won't work, it just won't read the disc, and when it does and asks for the update, the update fails. ._.

what media have yout tried.

use imgburn with 16x verbatim burnt at 4x max, mine did update fine and did run metroid fine until the update settings seems to have rendered burnt disks useless.

I am off to get another wiikey to try that one, hopefully its something to do with that.

I've been having the same problem as Itolson. Now, would it be possible to update to 1.9b or g or whatever by use of SD Card?

Saw a bunch of people posting about how to install, here's my story.

-Downloaded 1.9g update, unrared
-burned to DVD-R using "cdrecord *us.iso" (I use linux)
Though only 40MB the burn looked more like a few hundred, so I assume some kind of padding took place, (didn't use any special options though)
-put disk in wii, showed up as gamecube game.
-update utility booted fine.
-Told me to hit A or reset to test and flash. No "A" button on any of my controllers did anything, but reset did a test flash, then reset again did a real flash
-Put in SMG disk
-Ok to update
-Game plays fine, no dup channels

That's it, no modifying of the iso's, used cdrecord (linux) to burn, everything worked fine

Thanks to Wiikey team for working this out in a crunch!!

Just to clarify, it's a 'gamecube' disc and so your Wiimote won't work once you've loaded the disc. It's looking for a GameCube controller....

It may be thay CDRecord does what Nero does and write DVDs in high compatibility mode.

Right, something has to die right now. I'm getting pretty sick about not being able to do something as simple as installing 1.9b firmware just because of 'Bad connections'

I just want Metroid Prime Corruption DX

In regards to the "A" button, my Gamecube controller didn't work either, but it is wireless, I suspect that is the issue. Fortunately the flash can be started using the Wii reset button.

I've looked through this post and nothing seems to help with my problem. Here's the deal.

I have Wiikey and have updated my Wii to 3.0u.
Since it was updated to 3.0u, the Wii will not read any burned gamecube discs.
Since it won't read any burned gamecube discs, it will not read the Wiikey 1.3 Config disc, the 1.9b update, or the 1.9g update.
I've tried it using the gamecube size and making a multigamecube disc to no avail.

If anyone has any idea as to what needs to be done to make my wii recognize these discs, that'd be great. Thx in advance.

Do you even see the GameCube logo when you insert the disc?

Not at all. I just get the Unable to read disc error. GC backups haven't worked since my 3.0u firmware update, so I'm not sure how the wiikey update will work at all since the wii is supposed to see it as a GC game.

I guess I just assumed they do. I don't actually have any GC disc anymore. I'll borrow one from a friend and try it. I'll post the results later.

I've the same issue as abefarley..

I've wiikey installed on a firmware 3.1E wii
try to do the 1.9b firmware update and 1.3 config disk, both no luck,
it just say can't reconize the disk at the disc page in wii menu, not even showing they are gamecube disk

I've tried using imation DVD-R, +R on 2x and 4x with NERO and IMGBURN
I've followed the typical procedures..d/l files from wiikey.cn, and use the filechop method...and sucessfully expanded to the 1.35GB size ISO

so...I really dunno what went wrong..maybe its something related to the 3.1E firmware so it can't read the disk, or..dunno maybe other reason?

Any help on the matter is a big help and great thx....

to both of you - are you 100% sure you are using the correct region image for your Wii? IE, PAL for europe etc.. ?

I have the same issue, although removing the cmos and leavinf the power disconected did get the thing working for all backups, but now none seem to work at all, i am getting the same problem as the people above.

all my originals work.... so the wii key must be ok, i have flashed to 1.9g, and they worked but when ireset or left it off for a while it would stop working.

I would definitely check over your installation of the WiiKey itself, as something could be shorting and causing an overheat.

If i leave the case top off, it seems to work so you would conclude its a short...

its all insulated and the wires have been hot melt glued down.

if you pull the dvd drive up slightly when its in situe it does seem to work.

maybe its the dvd drive, and it does not like been stressed, i have tried loosening the screws that hold the dvd on the snti vibration points.

i did see that someone else had a simular issue, i have managed to get the case on and it all works for now...

It cannot be a short as everything is insulated and it worked for 6 months previous, it only seemed to go wrong after i updated to the smg and the 1.9b wiikey update.

seems very strange...
