I live in Sydney, Australia. I bought my XBOX mid-December last year (2006). It is now October and the piece of crap has stopped working.
All that stuff about the triple red light, &etc is probably true. I don't have the triple, but the whole thing. It doesn't load up at all.
The reality is that i did nothing to it. I didn't drop it or mishandle it in any other way. I did play it, but didn't even qualify for overplaying it or something like that.
No consumer should spend good money on a console and then have the thing fail on them within ten months from general use.
I had wanted to be loyal to XBOX. I had bought the original system instead of PS2, and maybe telling, i had bought the N64 instead of PS1 before that. I was glad to see someone take on the PS megaweight, i felt competition in the games industry was good.
I should have known. This is another case of Microsoft releasing a product before it is ready, with defects and all. I hope systems are starting to be debugged as the console continues on its sale life.
Microsoft gives us the consolation when we buy the console that there is warranty, which you can purchase beyond the paltry (and highly conditional) 30 day-warranty which comes with the console standard (by law). But we shouldn't have to pay for a warranty (and it's damn expensive by the way), we should have some assurance that the system will last. But the system doesn't even last over ten months in many cases, and i am evidence of that.
I was buying the system more out of loyalty than consideration for its quality. I didn't research this latest console, and didn't consider the triple red light phenomenon anything more than propaganda levelled by PS fanatics(trust me.. their around!) or if real, very rare . Lets face it, the PS3 now has specs which are just as good, and arguably better. It's controller could do with a change, but that's for first person shooter lovers anyway.
In conclusion, don't waste your money on the XBOX360, it's faulty. Buy the PS3 instead.
Shame on Microsoft, a large company, for not quality testing the product fully, and for releasing a sub-standard prototype. I hope they get there just deserves and lose the console wars.
I'm not here to thrash the xbox. I bought my ps1 after I bought the N64 because Sony at the time had better games and I like you have been loyal to one console since. I'm sorry to hear that your machine crashed. I thought about getting a 360 because at a time I could get one cheap, but if I spend a single dollar I want some assurance that the system is going to work like it is supposed to. A couple of days ago I was talking to a guy at work and he asked me what console I owned. When I replied Ps3 he started on about how he wished that his xbox would just blow up because he has had nothing but problems with it. From what I've heard though the new elite, premium, and Halo edition xboxs have been cured of the red light issue, but it is too soon to really tell because the new hardware has only been implemented in the new consoles for about a month.
i feel u im on my seocnd box now in under a year i dont really have to much time to play games and its sat there the hole time good ventilation never been hit dropped or abused usually the heat kills it M$ loves our money n i use it more than my PS3 bc its been around longer and has more games but PS3 has sum nice games coming out soon so im pretty pumped gunna sell my box dust off the P# and enjoy life and not hav to worry about trip red rings lol.
I've had a 360 for about 6 months now. It's not the worst console in the world, maybe I've been lucky though.
It does tend to have it's brainfarts, I don't think a day has gone by when it hasn't crashed at least once, either by locking up or doing it's stupid "disc is unreadable" error (which is annoying when you're on the last level of Halo 3 and you haven't saved it since level 4).
In retrospect, I wish I'd paid that little bit extra and bought the PS3 instead.

no i don't think thats true, my friend bought his first elite and the dvd drive didnt work wouldn't play any games or dvds, so he sent it back and got another and that one had the three red lights after an hour or so of playing halo, right now he's gettin a new one, my other friend swapped his xbox for a ps3 after seeing this. and bieng a xbox fanboy is actually loving his ps3! and the guy with the elite is saying if it breaks on him again he'll get a ps3. lets all hope it does.
I think i am right when i suggest that there is a loyalty element to. There are PS people, who will defend the PS, and XBOX people, the opposite.
It is telling to look at the very same post and the responses to it in the 360 forum. Two of three are supportive of XBOX, but as prior XBOX owners, we know the truth.
I have a 360 and it never broke down. True, i had some probs with it here and there, but the console works awesome for me. It has a bunch of good games and i don't think it's a piece of crap.
lol, while i admit i am a bit of a sony fanboy i dont hate the 360 because i love the ps3, i didnt buy one for the fact that the failure rate is dismal, its made from cheap materials and while the game library may be big they mainly consist of shoot em ups, and to be honest i dont wanna play repetitive shooters all the time, there is 1 thing however that i like about the 360 that i think sony would be wise to implement ideas from, xbox live.
anyway sonys game library is growing, some amazing games are coming out, innovative ones (little big planet), long awaited sequels/sagas, xbox fanboys gripe about the ps3 having no games is coming to an end, and frankly that is there only lifeline now the elite and ps3 cost nearly the same, i asked my freind who was a previous xbox fanboy why he didnt want a ps3 and all he could come up with is there are no games! thats it.
I am a Sony fan... most gear in my house is Sony, but, am not going to ram it down peoples throats.
I did buy the 360, basicly because i couldnt hold my p*ss and wait for the PS3, lol.
I have to admit, i have never had any trouble with my 360 since i got it, but i just couldnt get the urge to come home from work, sit down, and bust my thumbs playing it into the ground, never happened.
Even with GOW an Halo3, played them once and switched it off.
Since i got my PS3, i play it everyday, wait till the kids go to bed and eastenders finishes (the woman watches it!) i play that thing to death.

iam with this guy i had my 360 since launch and not one single problem with it,it works great.
The original messsage here was posted on the Xboxx 360 forum too - that's a bit sad!
Anyway, I have owned the PS1, PS2 and own an Xbox 360 which is flashed and great at 1080i resolution. I will also buy and love the PS3 once I can play backups on it. For me, as long as game developers rips us players off, I will not buy full priced games. If they cut the cost of them to more reasonable prices, I will only buy original games. Until then, my PC and 360 are great :)
i think too many people care about this subject. I only have PS and while i love my machine im p'ed off that theres no games. I was 1 of those who got 1 on launch day and i wish id waited. But o well. Anyway once Sony get thier act together im sure they will catch up on sales n what not. Sony are a trusted company and only have a reputation to lose. They have a long history for making consoles and will come good in the end. Microsoft have the money but no one does it like the Japs. Do they buy xbox in japan?
Also stop going on about "ah this thread will be closed ur beig fanboys" just let people chat about it.
