Yes,

I have a US system.

So, is all this mess caused by people trying to play SMG from a region other than the system's?!?

Hey there, I can only help for sure if you have a USA SMG game and a USA wii. SO if this is the case (same as me) just leave it at 1.9g as long as your sure you have it. Put the game in your wii and let it update, then you should be good to go. If for some reason you get an E001 error it means that your not at 1.9g. So update (flash wiikey) again.

Try that and let me know if you have any other questions.

As you can see D2Ckey is no guarantee.

hi all, this might be a stupid question... but how do i know if its NTSC-J or NTSC-U? i have a NTSC copy but the group that dumped it did not indicate which is which...

in addition, does a jap wii with wiikey mean it is:
-pal
-can update firmware from a pal game or NTSC-J?

i am a little confuse after reading all this... thanks in advance

Somewhere I read that checking the ISO with Brickclocker will show you the region of the file. I haven't done it myself though.

Yep just try it...its easy. Run brickblocker exe, load the .iso in question and click on the "read info" button. It will bring up the results just below the button. If it says usa you dont need to do anything else with the file. just close it off, burn the .iso to a dvd and voila!

No mod chip is ever a guarantee. I've heard alot of people having problems with SMG on any chip, however, there are an equal number of individuals, including myself, playing the US version of SMG, original and backup, on my D2CKey, first try, no problems.

Perhaps the media quality isn't up to par? Laser is burned out? There are hundreds of factors but IMO the D2CKey is pretty versatile.

Here is my problem.

I downloaded the smg hotfix and burned the pal version to a DVD-r.
updated the firmware on my wiikey, put in the backup pal version of smg and started the update. The progress bar went straight to the top then just stayed there. I waited about 4 hours then realized that nothing was going to happen so I turned off my wii.

All my games but smg still work. When go I into the game channel it just shows the wii and gamecube disc spinning, no errors, just the two spinning.

This seems to be a pretty unique problem. Any ideas?

I have a question here, I'm using a WiiFree Modchip, and I have no way to update it. Are there plans of removing the protection on SMG so I can grab it, or do I have to go get a new modchip? I was hoping by now someone would have cracked it, and released a fix in the game itself. Not a modchip update.

As what was posted before you can use brickblockesr to check the region of the .iso, I think SDMFer was just using NTSC-U as thats what he/she would look for, you would want the region that corresponds to your Wii, as SMG seems to be region locked.

No a NTSC-J Wii (Jap Wii) with a WiiKey is still a NTSC-J Wii it may be able to play some Pal Wii games do to the region free ability of the WiiKey but not all Pal games, there is a site with a list of compatable game on it somewhere I'll have a look and try and post it later.

You should only update your Wii from Games from the same region as your Wii, or from the internet

I've not heard of anyone doing this not sure if it could be done.

You can update your WiiFree Modchip using A pic programmer and all that jazz, but WiiFree is no more so you have to move onto YAOSM which is very good, and SMG compatible (see below)

http://psx-scene.com/forums/yaosm/

doesn't seem too hard if you chips in a socket and a programmer is probably cheaper than a new chip

I haven't actually tried one, but I would have to say no. It's different when you load a backup from a different region, because the WiiKey kicks in and if you have region override on then you're all good (assuming the game will play). But if you're using an authentic copy of the game from a different region then the WiiKey does not come into play, therefore the whole "disc from a different region" comes into play and would give you a disk error.

Sorry. Even doing a rawdump of the authentic game and trying to play that will most likely not work. Check out the compatability list here: http://wiki.gbatemp.net/index.php?title=...y_List:_NTSC-US

Looks like you're SOL

Retail imports will work in the Wii system if you have region override ON. No need to back it up. But as falcon209 said the Japanese game is not region compatible with North American Wii systems.

ok guys, just want to say u all r awesome n helped me alot to understand the wii modding scene, so i have one quesiton after looking through the compatibility table.

there is no way to play SMG in english for a jap wii.

is this statement correct? i looked through the region patcher list and for patching NTSC-U>NTSC-J, both dump of SMG does not work.

so for now, with a jap wii, i am stuck with playing japanese SMG correct? thanks alot =)

I just wanted to chime in.

I have a modded Wii. The Wii is updated to 3.1u and plays all games but SMG.

I have the original SMG disc. As one person mentioned, when I put this game in, the game window just has a spinning disc. When I click on it it says that an update must be performed (even though the Wii has the latest update, 3.1u). It says "Updating... Do not turn the power off. Please wait a moment." After a few seconds, it gets to 50% on the bar and never continues.

Is the only solution to install some sort of cutoff switch on the chip? I wonder if I must cut one wire or all of them (I know nothing about electronics). Everyone on this thread seems to be talking about the backups and how "the firmware update allows the system to check the game to see if it is a bootleg," but I can't play the original, which is just annoying. It never even loads. I can take it out and immediately put a bootleg or original game back in, and it will load fine. BLARG! I can't seem to find a solution to this on the thread.

I'll also give my feedback. I have a d2ckey on a PAL Wii. SMG works fine (PAL version on PAL Wii) without a glitch. Other titles also work fine. The only titles I have problems with are Rayman RR 1 and 2. The first doesn't even boot usually (the logo comes up but then black screens and crashes the Wii after launching or at max reaches the first logo page). The 2nd works but on some minigames it crashes the same way - always while loading. I've redone the DVDs for safety but nothing has changed so I think it is related to the game. If anyone has a D2CKey on a PAL Wii and has these 2 games please post your experience.
Thanks

As far as my original SMG not updating, I cut the power to the mod chip and it was able to update. There has to be something about this update that can detect a chip. I will remod the thing in the near future to see if it will play SMG in a modded, post-updated state.

i would have tried another burn before "cutting the power to the chip".,..hopefully it works for you though. I had no problems updating,

The copy I have is original, not a burned copy. It froze on the update every time.

did you try updating your chip? That might have solved it, although your error does seem different to the normal one.

Hey guys
I've got a video up of my working smg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJBXOHuNE-4
I had a few issues but they didn't occur
the next time i tried it for some one else
it could all depend on your initial conditions
and how many of your own region game updates you have completed
over the time of you owning the console
I think the key thing to try doing is try to stick
to your same region for newer games
older games you can try other regions and wii brick block for safety
so their updates don't happen.
But what i did was
1 original state wiikey
2 wii fw upto 3.0E (i said bugger at that stage since boot disc did not work for some time but that doesn't matter)
3 i did a wiikey fw update to 1.9B
4 straight after i rebooted i test games first
5 i did the wiikey 1.9G update
6 i played the original, it didn't work
7 i played the backup, the update completed, the system reset, the game didn't work
8 i tried the original again, it worked, so wierd
9 i tried the backup again, it worked, really wierd
10 and that is it, after that i helped my friends out
and i didn't have the orig smg with me and the backup
worked fine the first time unlike my machine, so the story varies
with every one
Good luk guys

Hi guys,

I've got a wiikey installed, played backed up games beautifully, until one day my friend pop in SMG. It tried to do an update with no cancel option so we turned it off.

Now my wii can't play backed up games. After reading numerous forums, I tried to update to 1.9g, but no matter how I burn the disk, my wii won't recognise the disk. I've tried the following:

1. burn using nero
2. burn using imgburn
3. used filechop
4. used verbatim, ritek dvds
5. updated firmware to 3.1E

All came back with unrecognised disk. I just realised I need a GameCube controller, which I don't have, but that shouldn't stop it from booting and recognising the disk, right?

Have I missed something? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am now a proud owner of 20+ dvd coasters...:(
