I Just got a hold of the guy I bought the Wii from and he is saying it is definitely a WiiKey mod chip. I'm feeling a little more comfortable about moving forward but would still like to know if anyone knows what would happen if I put in the 1.9g update and it turned out I didn't have a Wiikey?
Would SMG just not play? That would be an acceptable result.
What I wouldn't want to happen is all my other backups stop playing. Attempting this to play SMG isn't worth that to me - if it were MarioKart for Wii, then maybe it would be :)

It would just give you a connection error type screen, nothing happened, at least for me when I tried it.

Good to know.
The site the guy I brought my Wii from seems to only sell the WiiKey so I'm going to move forward and assume I've got a Wiikey.
So, since I have a US Wii (with firmware 3.1u) and "hopefully" a wiikey (not sure what update but I've had the Wii since May) I'll do the following probably this weekend:
1. run wiikey update 1.9g
2. run GCOS config disc to turn region override back on
3. hope and keep my fingers crossed.

Can someone clarify one thing. . . the readme file for the 1.3 GCOS disc states:
__________________________________________________________________
Region override [ON/OFF]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Enabling this option will make the region of wii/gc games appear to
be the region of your console, allowing you to boot games from other
regions. Most NTSC wii games will work on US and JAP consoles. Many
PAL games will run on NTSC consoles.
__________________________________________________________________
I my case, I only backup from original games from my region (USA). Thus, if I don't need to "boot games from other regions" I assume I don't need to mess with the GCOS disc, correct?
P.S. - I couldn't get the 1.9g ISO to burn to a DVD with Nero. Do I need to use Filechop? I was under the impression (mistaken perhaps) Files chop was just needed for the GCOS disc.
I didn't read this thread until I tried a backup of SMG today. I read a lot of posts and seems like Wiikey has fix out. I have a WIID, is there an update for WiiD to get around this security on this game? Anyone?
YAY, I finally was able to get the 1.9g firmware and the 1.3U firmware installed to my wii.
1.Can someone please tell me what to do next, and if it is safe to use the updates on Super Mario Galaxy if it is in my same region.
2.I have read in some forums that after installing this, previously working backuped games will not work anymore. Is this true for some?
3.Once I install this update on SMG, will I be set for other games that also have updates like Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, and not have to install those updates on those games?
I think you mean firmware 3.1U for your Wii (and not 1.3U).
So, if your Wii is up to 3.1U and your Wiikey is at 1.9g, have fun paying SMG and all the other games out there.
Two words of caution:
1) Please, try to use only games from you Wii's region.
2) Keep an eye on ths thread and this one here before you try the upcoming new release games. Just in case Nintendo tries to sneek in another evil update.
A mate twisted my arm to install a WiiKey in his new Wii, luckily he had gotten a an old chipset as I wouldn't attempt a D2CKey, Installed the WiiKey fine, updated the Wii of the net, updated the WiiKey no problem, everything went perfect, put in a copy of SMG to check and it played straight off, I thought that It installed an SMG specific update, guess this must be included in the most recent update off the net (or one of the games he got with it Fifa and M & S at the Olympics), strange.
Can someone please tell me what the reason is for people's backups not working anymore once SMG is updated on their Wii, and they have the wiikey with the latest firmwares.
As of today, There are three conditions to be met for your Wii and Wiikey to run backups impeccably:
1) Wii must be updated at 3.1
2) Wiikey must be at 1.9g
3) Region Override must be ON
Other than this, the only things that would prevent backups from running are:
1) Bad or Broken soldering job
2) Bad media
3) Wrong region games
4) Games which need to install an update, but have been patched by Wiibrickblocker
5) Clueless people that even after countless posts stating tha same thing still can't figure out how to follow directions.
;=)))
Is it better to use the update with the update on SMG using a backuped or real version of the game. I am asking this, since I want the best results. Please tell me if it is better to update the wii using the real SMG or a backup.
THANK YOU
Again wiigame let's stick w/ asking your question 1x - not in different threads. Last warning.
The answer you received in another thread:
Quote: It makes no difference whatsoever.
If I use the update on SMG, will I have to update again on other previous games that I have not yet updated with like Mario and Sonic at the Olympic games?
1.9g fix.
Step 2: Run the 1.9g fix (burn this image w/ ImgBurn which is free).
Step 3: You will be prompt to run the update by either using a GC
controller (press A button) or by pressing reset (I was
using a GC controller for my update.
Step 4: You will see a % bar at the bottom. Once this update
completes you MUST run the second update!!! You will see a
WARNING to not turn off your console during the second
update. Once this is done you will receive a message to
insert SMG and to restart the system.
Step 5: ENJOY the game!!
Most people I see having issues w/ updates and/or fixes only run the first update thinking that the second one's the same thing; it's not.
* I did this on a US console w/ the NTSC (US) image.
** The 1.9g update is in .rar format. Extract the .rar file to a
specified directory. You will have 4 files: JAP, US, & PAL (I
believe). Burn the .ISO for your console's region and burn using
ImgBurn. That's it! I hope this helps.
Hey, I know I'm quoting a very old reply, but I'm just kinda dumb and need some answers. So are you saying that I need to upgrade my Wii to the latest version (it wouldn't cause older backups to not work, right?)? Also, I'm not sure what version my Wiikey is (there's no analog clock on the Wii main menu), so do I have to upgrade to 1.9b then 1.9g?
What would the order be? 1.9b -> Wii update -> 1.9g? or something else.. Thanks in advance, I'm slow at this stuff.
it will not brick your wii
1. update wii firmware to 3.1u
2. run wiikey update 1.9g
3. run GCOS config disc to turn region override back on
4. put in SMG let it update and enjoy.
Issue:-
Super Mario Galaxy (espalwii) PAL crashes (black screen) at same point on first level all the time - so I get though to choose my character and the game starts with Mario kicking his heels and lets me move around to pick up some stars and just as I'm moving down the hill approaching the "town centre" (?) it crashes, everytime - and I just get a black screen.
What have I done:-
Wiikey.cn site has been down for about 3 weeks now so I downloaded 1.9g PAL update from another site where it was pre-padded - so i've burnt it and successfully upgraded from 1.9b (I think) to 1.9g - I hear homer say something. I think I actually downloaded the upgrade on SMG before I successfully upgraded to 1.9g (initially I just ran the test without realising it hadnt actually upgraded). But i'm now definitely on 1.9g and 3.1E. First time I got the 001 error, then the 2nd time it asked me to upgrade etc, now it seems to work fine until it crashes on the first level.
Burnt nearly 10 disks using different media at slowest possible speeds - either Nero 6 or Imageburn although Imageburn doesnt seem to work very well for me at all. Same thing with Sony DVD-R, Sony DVD-RW, Magmedia DVD-R, Magmedia DVD+R, Imation DVD-R and rather expensive Verbatim DVD-R
I was pretty sure it was the media because of what a couple of people have said, Clepto I think.
I've tested both the RAR file (Winrar test, no errors) and Verified one of the burnt disks using Imageburn, no errors.
General
Got a PAL with genuine Wiikey installed (seller says it's genuine). I've played about 10 backups with NO ISSUES whatsoever, and another 20 backups that crash at some point or other - so mine does seem a little picky.
Help Please
If anyone has some ideas i'm all ears. But also, generally, for those PAL wii's with wiikey issues are there any solutions? I thought the last (1.9b) firmware update was supposed to make the Wiikeys' work with more media (make it less fussy). If that hasn't quite worked do you think there will be a solution eventually? With the Winrar and Imageburn tests is that confirming that the burns are perfectly fine and thereby confirming that: the ISO is good, the burner is good? I'm thinking of burning from another DVD player but will have to do a fair bit of faffing around. Imageburn has never given me joy, I get alot that stuff up because the program won't exit properly - is this a known problem. Is Nero 6 good, or would Nero 7 or 8 be better?
i have a PAL Wii and had no issues whatsoever with the Wiizard release. Maybe you want to try that one? Hell, I beat the game, send me 10 bucks and i'll send you my version of Galaxy... Not for profit, damn DL DVDR's cost a fortune and so does shipping from Oz to the rest of the world ;-)
Maybe it's because people post assumptions and all the well-intended info isn't always 100% factual...
I have 3.0 running, and every wii game I have tried works impeccably. I even got Metroid Prime AFTER I already finished Wiizard's Mario Galaxy.
So to say you MUST HAVE 3.1 running isn't fact at all...
