Its basically the same as running linux on a normal computer, you can do things like browse the web, check email, play all media formats and anything that normal linux can do

No you can't

Who says not to upgrade? IMO there's no point in keeping the PS3 at a lower firmware as you can't go on PSN and play online (and there are no hacks in the first place). I recommend upgrading to 2.00 to experience all that the PS3 currently offers.

The reason people say not to upgrade the firmware is because at the moment paradox only have it working on the 1.50 firmware and if you go for a higher firmware it might be harder to hack.
You can also go on PSN without upgrading the firmware.
The only reason we need to upgrade the firmware is to unlock stuff sony locked on purpose, firmware upgrades are mainly sonys efforts to try and stop their system being hacked.
I upgraded to version 2.0 only because i cant be bothered waiting for the hack to be made public, new firmware does add features like upscaling dvd,wma support, upscaling PS2 games, better wi fi stabability, custom playlists for your music or pictures and many more.

We don't even know if they are for real yet. There isn't a way to downgrade at the moment because there is no need.

Thats not true,Paradox have been around for years and they have been working on the PS3 hack from day 1,they are just trying to perfect it and get rid of any bugs and doing that takes time, there is a way to downgrade from 1.60 to 1.55 but i wouldnt advise doing it as i dont know if it would damage the PS3 or not.

So is it either Run Linux or Upgrade to 2.0. Or can I do both, and one doesn't effect the other?

They don't affect each other. It's perfectly fine. There have been rumors of an ISO loader since a short time after launch and nothing much has been released. Most of us have given up on anything coming soon and are just enjoying online and PSN.

I think the iso loader will be out soon possibly before the end of the year.

Those were announced a year ago, they never came out. My opinion: Fake.
