PS3 gets its own antivirus application

article published on 16 November, 2007

Even just a few years ago, the idea of a company offering anti virus software for a games console would have been laughable. Nowadays however, the Internet's role in consoles (even handhelds like the PSP) is growing, and so too is the risk of getting malware infections or exposing sensitive data. At least that is the assertion of Trend Micro Inc., which has launched such software for the ... [ read the full article ]

I think is gonna be useful since next-gen consoles are becoming more pc-funtioned. Much more useful then that xbox360 app that parents sets the time limit on how long the system can be played lol.

Hmm... does this mean someone has broken the PS3 software and hacked into it? You know what that means: Homebrew! Oh, and this Trend Micro crap is probably a stunt to not allow unsigned/non-Sony code from running on the PS3.

The reason MS doesn't have this BTW, is because all games run through the Xbox Live servers, and don't rely on third parties (ie. GameSpy) for their online play. I would believe that beyond being a revenue stream, Xbox Live was designed like this from the ground up for security reasons.

Sounds good. If you want it, get it. If you dont want it, dont get it. I have not used the PS3 much to surf the web, was worried about getting a virus. I will feel more comfortable once this comes out. Thanks Sony and Trend Micro Inc.

I better be able to turn it on and off.
And it better not change firmware or anything like that.
Or even pay.

Why? It's not Windows! That's not a knock on Windows, because I use it for everything, but have you ever seen a virus on a Mac, Linux PC, cell phone, PDA, iPod, etc.??? I'm sure there's one or two out there, but it's rare. If a virus were to happen, can't Sony just patch the hole in their software and send out a firmware update? I think this is a ridiculous feature, and who knows what it scans and how that effects system performance.

I dont think it is a bad idea for them to give you this option to use. I would prefer something like NOD32 which doesnt hurt your performance like other anti-viruses.

Is Sony involved in this?

With their track-record?

No thanks.

I'm pretty sure this is meant for the PS3 web browser and not playstation network gaming.

Hell after 6 months of PC chilin 7 I dropped it and got Kasversky for 30(instead of 20 I normally get trend pcc).

It might run better in a lunix enviroment but trend is not all that great they have fallen to last even under mcafee 0-o

Norton is still to fcking costly, I will only pay 20-30 for a full AV/firewall app I refuse to pay more than that and even teh norton AV oems are not cheap....

Zippy Norton is the the worst next to Mcafee. Those are like playmates to viruses and trojans and so forth. They never detect anything until its either done its dirty deeds or your pc is already dead.

I dont go off reviews i go off experience. Since i got some common sense and since i have done PC repair work. If we had 250 customers and 150 of them had norton 120 of those people would be infected with a virus or trojan and so forth within a month or so. Some could have been do to user error or recklessness or just a crappy product. Norton is known for not detecting things until its done its deeds and thats a pure fact not my personal opinion.

The trend micro software is only for the internet browser on the PS3 and its mainly to protect kids from pictures and videos that are explicit or stuff with swearing.

Nod32 is the second best kapersky is the best,if your still getting viruses with any of these two you dont have them set up properly.

The average user rating for NOD32 on CNET is a 9.3. CNET rated NOD32 2.5 a 7.3 only because it's confusing for the average user but the people still rated it an 8.9. Most Nortons and Kaspersky were rated a 7 or an 8 by CNET and no higher then 6 by the people.

I always used to use Norton because everyone told me it was the best. Then I got a Trojan.Vundoo.B or whatever(like a million others too, don't ask), and even it managed to get infected! I couldn't get rid of the virus because I would be deleting my AV! But I did it anyways and was on the lookout for an AV and I needed one fast. I downloaded Kaspersky and it cleaned every virus. I rescanned and they were all still there! So I was like WTF and then I found NOD32 and it cleaned everything! Although I still had to recover my computer because everything was so F-ed up but oh well. Now I use NOD32 on all my computers and I can find all my needs for it on the fan forum(you should know what I'm talking about).

The best antivirus is Panda in my opinion have had it on my PC for a long time now.I have never had to worry about viruses, and I tried out Nod32 and Kaspersky and they both suck compared to Panda.Even their nanoscan online virus scanner is better than Nod32 and Kaspersky.

Most viruses made are targeting Norton or the more popular antivirus programs. There is no True Prevent technology, because you can bypass any antivirus program.

Did you set NOD32 up right? That's the only problem with NOD32. It's like a pizza some guy said. It gives you many "toppings" or choices, which is good but some just like the plain sauce and cheese. I went through all the settings last night on my friend's computer and now it's bullet-proof :)

But knowing my friend, he'll find a way to really screw things up, again...

The only way to stay away from viruses is to buy a Mac like I did :P

Anyways, I just put NOD32 2.7 on one of my other friend's computers and it cleaned 60+ trojans :)

Norton was once again found crying in the corner, useless.
