OK... i can clean the solder iron and was with a wire pad... but i thought he was using some kind of special cleaner... Then what was he doing when he would reach out of view of the camera,, and something was clicking or snapping???? I guess that is what i was trying to ask before.... soldering is soldering if you have the right tools.... its not hard... but if you dont have the correct equipment.... thats when it gets challening.
I modded several xbox's so i have the experience....

The sound was again because of the stupid microphone placement. That microphone is supposed to be put onto somebodys clothes to pick up voice, we clipped it onto the tv instead... so when he cleans the tip there is some vibration on the table that gets picked up by the microphone :-)

It's in HansiBB's signature.

Wow that soldering iron setup is over $400. I think I'll just stick with my 15w Radioshack iron lol.

In the video, once you tested the chip it looks like you put some tape over it to hold it in place. What kind of tape is that? Is it just white electrical tape? In my experience electrical tape always leaves a sticky residue why you go to remove it.

Yeah I think it's just white electrical tape.

Well then what do you use instead? I cover all of my mods with electrical tape so that no shortage happens.

I've never had to use electrical tape over circuitry before. I've only used it in more industrial applications. The modchips I've used in the past secured directly to the board without the need of tape.

I'm fairly certain that i shouldn't have much of a problem with the chip install on the Wii. I just need to find a 0.3mm tip for my soldering iron.

We use jbc advanced series soldering stations with 0.3mm tips.

We use Almit 0,5mm solder with some Ag (silver) and bit lower melting point than "regular" solder.
What temperature are you running your iron at?

if your unsure about using tape on the chip put it on the metal tray underneath but it is generally called electricians tape for a reason.

Question, is the solder you all are using flux core? Can I pick up the supplies I need at my local Radio Shack? Things I will need: new fine tip for gun, solder (size?) and wire. What gauge wire do I need?
I have some experience with the soldering but I am going to be practicing on some old boards first. D2C chip has been ordered along with the flexB. Wish me luck!
Will post results after finished.

HansiBB, Seeing as how you have actual experience with both the D2Ckey and the Argon, which do you find to be the better solution and why?

So is there one edge there in that video that's not being soldered? And does the whole flex board with D2C circuit board soldered onto it "clip" onto something in the Wii? Or does it just sit where it is and you solder all the points? Also, does the D2C usually come with instructions?

Westja, no instructions come with the mod chip or key.... they come in a package... thats it.

the mod chip does not attach to anything on the board. Use tape to secure it to the board.

Ok, I watched the video again, I can't seem to see when he solders these contacts:

(I made little black arrows to indicate the contacts I'm talking about. I mean the whole side, not just those 3)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v167/Zat_AJ/D2C.jpg

Do those contacts have to be soldered? Are there any contacts that do not have to be soldered with the flex board?

Thanks for all your guy's help.

Those are alternate solder points that you can use if you are not using the flexPCB. The flexPCB has all of its soldering points around that one smaller chip.

Oh I see, thank you for that. So is there a good diagram of the flex board like that, that will show me all of the solder points?

Wow... thanks so much for that. That's what I needed. (That's not sarcasm.)

And what about those two little cords? I suppose it doesn't usually come with those either eh?

TODAY i would prefer d2ckey. With the flexpcb, it takes about 5 minutes less for us to install. And NO complaints at all from our customers.

But, if/when the day comes and one major gametitle refuse to work with the d2ckey, you will probably be better off with a modchip that is supported with updates.

If you are deciding between one or another, maybe you should wait a couple of weeks. The releasedate and quality of the next argon update will be a good sign of what to expect from their product.

Maybe you should look at their history of products too, from the ancient Origa modchip for the PS2 released probably 6 or so years ago and the O2 modchip that was their first firmware/updateable product that was released a couple of years ago.

Does anyone have a good picture of the completed install with the flex board? Or a more detailed picture of the inside of the Wii itself? I'm just trying to get as much info as I can so that my Mom can solder this for me without messing up. She's just suppose to solder all of the points right? They just all line up after doing the first few?

Just installed using flex circuit, having following issue.

The DVD drive shows up on the Wii menu now, but the following error is displayed after about 10 sec, whether you select the drive or not:

"An error has occurred. Press the eject button and remove the disc, then turn the Wii console off and refer to the Wii operations manual for help troubleshooting."

The drive does have the sports game in it that came with the console. The eject button does not work to eject it. The DVD drive never does spin after power up, and does not appear to recognize this legitmate disk.

Can anyone offer suggestions?

Start with the typical troubleshooting... bridges, unconnected IC legs, etc. Check the resistance at teh X resistor. Also check the typical fuses. Most likely, though, it's a bridge. Use a multimeter to check for bridges. Then clean with desolder braid. Good luck, though... cleaning up a flex install is actually harder than cleaning up a wire install.
