I believe there were a few version of 7 that had trouble autoburning, but believe the latest version works fine.

I have the latest version of Nero 7 and I assure you it auto burns with Shrink. As Deadrum pointed out, there was a few Nero 6 versions here and there that caused problems. Several sites list "most stable" versions for use with Shrink. Some of the Nero 7 versions may have caused problems, but I didn't personally run into any.
I contacted Nero about 8 not working with Shrink to autoburn. At first they sent me a form letter with a bunch of crap telling me what to check and nothing is wrong with Nero. Then someone finally read what was in the message after I informed them I wasn't the village idiot and had been using Nero for some time. I was told Nero 6 was the last version produced that was supposed to support Shrink. I guess we were lucky with Nero 7. From the sounds of things, they're not worried about Nero 8 not supporting Shrink, or vice versa. After all, Nero is pushing Shrink's twin, Recode.

I agree with your take on that little app. I've learned to avoid batch writing software in any form.
