Sony will release new a PS3 firmware update tomorrow that will enhance the PS3's Blu-Ray movie playback, and add that anticipated AVI support we've all wanted.

Firmware version 2.10 will add 'Profile 1.1' Blu-Ray playback, which is the technical name for a new standard of Blu-Ray films that support new features such as picture-in-picture playback.

DivX support will also be added, along with VC-1 (wmv) video support, so you can finally watch all those perfectly legal videos on your PC through PS3.

Sony's also adding an option to change your voice online. Long-time xbox Live fans will remember Voice Masking on Xbox, which was removed when whiny kids doing constant impressions of Arnie with a robot voice got too much to bare.

I think this is just a rumour or a mistake by Sony,i have searched the official Playstation site for ages and found nothing,i did find a site saying this.

"The full content of new firmware 2.1 was posted at Spain?s PS3 official site but was removed an hour later"

Full story.

It would be good if it was true.

Hi, I cant seem to get any of my DIVX or VLC-1 files to work after updating my PS3 with the new firmware.

Can someone give me a step by step way of doing it.

Can you actually transfer these files onto your PS3 and play them or do they have to be streamed from your PC?

Please help guys I'm not having much luck!!

ok.. I read this some where....

Quote:
"XviD does not work. Again, no XviD support at all. You'd be surprised how many of your files are actually XviD and not DivX, especially if you've been "obtaining" TV shows and movies over the years. Often times the files aren't labeled with the codec type in the name, so you'll have to try and play it back to know whether or not it's supported. If it's not, the file name will change to "Unsupported Data." [Some readers are reporting that XviD support works. Others have written us saying that some files work, others don't. Jason has tried this with a few XviD files and none of them worked. -JD]"
I tried atleast 30 CD's and DVD's with several different avi's, both xvid and divx.. and yes I know the difference in both... Also...

Quote:
"Update: We've found that XviD playback does work, but only on burned DVDs and external hard drives. See here for an update and a workaround."
They do play on CD's... I tried several.... My point is every single disc I played worked perfect, unlike previously they would say "unsupported data"

I have some trouble playing back some xvid files that are only about 700MB each. The other smaller ones playback fine, any one know why this is?
