I dont know if this happened to anyone else or if anybody has heard any different, but I "enhanced" a slim for a guy a while back and everything was working properly afterwards-I loaded a few emulators on the memstick as well as an iso game to test it out-and verified the firmware version as 3.71M33-2...
Heres the deal-I got an email from the guy a couple days ago, he said the emulators are not working anymore, and wanted to know if "Out of curiousity" if he happened to run the update from the network update icon in the XMB would it update the firmware-I told him it shouldn't because I was under the impression that it was disabled under cfw...Well, I ended up meeting with him earlier this evening because I needed to see for myself...Lo and behold, his slim psp that I had previously installed custom firmware on is now running official 3.80 firmware....
Just wanted to let folks know that apparently you dont get the DADADADA error when you run the update from the Network Update icon-It will just update to official firmware...
Does anyone know of a way to prevent that? Is there a prx file you can put into flash0 like on the fat psp so it will just reboot when you select the network update?

there is a prx file that will disable the update. i have it on my slim and fat, and on my brother's fat. i think i got it from qj.net.
it will basically remove the update command from the system. you will still see it in the xmb, but pressing it will do nothing.

That sounds good-I just figured it would be like on the fat psp, where you can download the update, but it wouldn't execute and you would get that DADADA error...I guess not-
I'll look into that prx file-maybe I'll have to drop that into flash when I do other slims from now on...
I have one on my fat psp that reboots the system when you press network update-

you don't get the error on the slims. it just does nothing. you see the browser active icon for a second, then it's gone. and i don't think it's possible to get a restart on the slim; i think i semi-bricked trying to set it up. maybe i did it wrong.
but i think that the network update should be disabled on cfw. it would prevent loss of cfw to complete newbs to the psp.

I agree, I thought it already was disabled, which is why I was shocked to hear that this guy managed to get official firmware on his slim after I installed the custom firmware...

found the files on qj.net. but before doing anything, REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOUR FLASH0! failure to do so will leave you with nothing to fall back on, incase you have a semi-brick. and for overkill safety, have pandora's battery and ultimate pandora's memory stick handy.

I still don't understand how people can accidentally update via network update.
It isn't like when you press the network update it automatically installs the new firmware.
First you need to choose the connection to even connect for the update.
It then will search for an update and if there is 1 it will say to insert a Memory Stick and press X to download it. Giving you the opportunity to press O to cancel.
You then have the opportunity to cancel the the update (pressing O) during the update download.
After it finishes downloading the update it then gives you the choice to Press X to install it or press O to go BACK to install it later.
Even if you start the update it will not perform the update till you accept the user agreement.
I mean come on accidentally update via network connection?
If someone accidentally updates going through all those steps they don't need their PSP modded in the first place.
I would assume these steps are the same for a SLIM as well correct?

Yes they are the same for the slim.
My guess is that people don't really know what the network update is so they just do it anyhow.

The steps are the same-except on a slim psp it actually executes the update. (I tested it out earlier 3.71M33-4 to official 3.80) Whereas on a fat psp with custom firmware, you can download the update but if you try running it you get the DADADA error and it stops there..
I guess if I didnt know any better, I would think by running the network update it would update my custom firmware psp to the latest offering..I wonder if people actually think that?

Larry you said before that if you run Chilly Willy's KeyCleaner...on a TA-082 PSP it will allow you to update to Official firmwares right....with no trouble at all..?
I'm talking about the TA-082 Glitch when updating from 1.50 to any other official firmware.

I think the same ol' thing.
Nevertheless, there are several new people that get custom firmware through us people that know about this here stuff and then we don't give some short advice to them fellas, because we sometimes are so into this that we forget the other guy knows nothin about CFW, or we simply assume he won't be dumb enough to do that.
It's just a matter of telling each time we install CFW for someone or see someone that is new on this and has CFW to contact us to help them upgrade, or at least point them to the right place to keep 'em from doin' things the wrong way.

I guess I didn't think anything of it because I figured it was the same as the fat psp's where if you tried to run the update, it would stop with the DADADA error...I know for future reference I will certainly let people know not to use that update function-either that or just drop that prx file in their flash0 folder.

Hey Deez_nutz would you be willing to "enhance" my PSP Slim for me? I counldn't figure out how to message yet so I posted that shout thing and now I'm trying here. If not that's cool, I haven't been in the PSP modding scene since 2.0 or something when I downgraded to 1.5 when I bought my first PSP. Now everything seems all confusing to me, so just let me know, thanks

if on 3.80 m33, it is safe to use network update now. you will get updates from DAX's site instead of official sony updates.
but to be sure, check the recovery menu configuration, and make sure that use m33 network update is enabled.

^^Good point-I noticed that when I was getting the new update from psp-hacks..Thats a real nice feature where you can get cfw updates and just run them like an official one...
I will edit the title of this thread.
Anybody who is not using 3.80M33 or 3.80M33-2 on their slim should NOT use Network Update from their psp-it WILL update your psp to official firmware, and you WILL be screwed!! This is only for folks using 3.71M33-4 and below on the psp slim

YES, if you have a slim psp that is running custom firmware version 3.71M33-4 and below, and if you were to follow through with the update-it would update your psp to official firmware and you would no longer be able to play homebrew or games from the memory stick. However that has been fixed by Dark_Alex with the release of his new custom firmware version 3.80M33...
