You may want to note that the PS3 currently only plays DivX. There is no Xvid support. That being said, some DivX videos don't run, some do. There is no limit to the resolution though, so high def DivX files should play fine.

Thanks for the swift replies.
Can you run them straight from the hard drive then or do they need to be on disk? Do you play them from the harddrive smoggie?

Are they x264 or h264 files if so how do you get them to play on your PS3?

The PS3 can play media from either the hard drive or optical media (DVD/CD). They would both function the same as it's simply a storage medium.
Just make sure that they do not exceed 2gb as this is currently the maximum the PS3 can handle with DivX.

DivX uses h263 quantization so I am not sure about h264 avi support. AVC uses h264 so in theory the decoder is already in the system as it's needed for blu-ray movies encoded with the AVC codec but whether or not it can access this codec after splitting an avi container I am not sure as I haven't tried. If anyone has tried please post away...

agreed.. make sure they don't exceed 2gb... as for dvix and xvid... my ps3 has played every movie i have on my hard drive (either dvix or xvid.. the ones that are approx 700mb each or 700mb each part of the movie if the movie is divided into 2)... so it seems mine works perfect unless my movies are actually dvix but where i downloaded it named all of my xvids with dvix lol .. as for hd movies like what i have in mkv format.. i just use redkawa ps3 9 converter and it works perfect in the 1080p setting even though its not actually converting it to 1080p i just found it the fastest converting setting with that program.. it usually almost doubles the size of your video though =S...im starting not to make sense so ill just stop there lol
i hope something in there made sense.. just ask what doesnt

When you say "them all" what are you reffering to? Are you downloading from the internet, converting yourself, etc... The reason I ask is because some of the one I get from the net for instance (The[1].Nanny.Diaries.[2007]DVDRip.Eng.XviD-DUQA [mininova].torrent) won't play on the ps3. ) But others will. I've download a supposed file format reader (afreecodecvt) and they appear the same.
Although as I type this I'm wondering maybe about the file name being to wierd for the player or something. I find that hard to believe since it shows the wierd named file just fine. I'll retest just incase.

Rejokerr, just a little tip... It's prob not a good idea to post information regarding illegal torrent downloads.
Anyway, I have found that mp4 compatibility is limited. I have found that with mpeg4 video (asp @ level 5) inside a mp4 container the PS3 doesn't want to play it. However that same video file inside an avi container and no problems (except for the 2gb limit). Now, if I play a mp4 file that has no b-frames then the PS3 seems to play those no problems too. Also, AVC (h264) video in a mp4 container seem to be compatible too.
Also, keep in mind that the audio also needs to be compatible. For example, if you have DTS muxed with mpeg4 video in an avi container the PS3 will say unsupported format (as that is not within DivX standards). If you demux the DTS file, recode to say AC3 (Dolby) and remux the file... The PS3 will play that with no problem.
So as far as playing them all... The short answer is no it wont play all of them but it will play quite a good range of the newer formats.

I am confused... At the start it sounds like you're talking about your PS3... Then it sounds like you are talking about your PC... ??
The problem you are having with your PC sounds a little strange. Are you sure that these are definitely movie files. I mean it is possible to download junk files from the net with the wrong extension, like mpg, avi etc. Usually the only way a graphics card can help is by giving the system more resources to play the file. For example, if you try to play the HD file and it stutters then that means your PC needs some upgrades to play it, like graphics card, CPU, RAM etc.
Could you post more info?... like...
The extension on the movie file? Is it mpg, VOB, m2ts etc.?
If possible information on the streams inside the movie container? The type of video and audio codec used to make up the file, resolution, bitrate etc. A freeware app called GSpot can tell you all this. Get it here... http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_...tools/gspot.cfm
Your PC specs? CPU, RAM, Graphics card, Hard drive etc.

its weird. as soon as i double click to play the hi def file my screen turns blue on my pc. so i streamed some avi and mpeg 4 files last night and they worked fine. with the hi def files i was getting a media server error 80710723 but with regular avi and mpeg 4 the files played fine. im pretty sure its the video card just wondering if there is a minimul requirement for tveristy to play these hi def files?

Ohh... You're using TVersity. Now it makes sense. Sorry, I have no experience there. I rather run my files off a flash drive or discs etc.

If your streaming the files to your PS3 then the graphics card wont really be doing anything it will be the CPU that is being used to pass the stream to the PS3.
However if you get the blue screen when trying to play these files directly on the comp then it could be the CPU or the graphics card.
I have an 8500GT card (came with the comp and isnt that good) but it does allow me to display HD films on my 26" HD TV. A good cheap card for HD play back is the 2400XT or 2600XT as both are designed more for films than games. Theres even a 2600XT with an HDMI port now as well.

From what Ive read now it would appear that your PC just isnt up to the job - most places are recommending a dual core as the minimum to play 1080p files on a PC. I think you may have to consider upgrading everything.
edit :- Oh and a gig of ram :)
