Is there a way you can view movies that are X264 on PS3 the file is only 1.09 gigs? I though i read somewhere that PS3 support these files.

since no one replied here yet.. im going to take a wild guess on your solution... im just going to guess you have a mkv file movie right? if so your solution is to either put on linux and play them off vlc player (obviously seems like a lengthy process).. or you can convert it to dvix or mpegs supported using ps3 9 video

i hope that helps

Okay to keep the quality as high as possible you want to try and reheader them rather than reencode them so that they can be copied/streamed to the PS3 from your PC without losing quality.

That being said download mkv2vob (http://www.digital-digest.com/software/download.php?sid=1652&ssid=0&did=1)

This will reheader the file as a .vob (which is supported by the PS3) and as it is not reencoded there is basically no quality loss.

I used this on a 720p version of transformers and it looks great on my 26" HDTV via HDMI.

Oh and another good thing about this program is it keeps the 5.1 Dolby Digital sound if you have it.

I got it from here - the creator link (might be different).

Download program
http://www.3r1c.eu/mkv2vob/mkv2vob.rar

1. Extract to a directory (dont just run it from within winrar) and run mkv2vob.exe
2. Select the MKV file
3. Select where to save the VOB.
4. Several windows will open/close during the process, do not interrupt it or click anything in these windows.
5. Playback the vob file through tversity, burn to dvd-r, flash drive, etc...

I followed the above - except I ran it from within winrar and every film Ive tried has worked first time.

If this is whilst playing it back on your PC yes thats what I get as well, however they play fine on the PS3 either streamed or copied across.

Yeh i just found that out but im not able to fastforward the hd movies like i can normal xvid files?? (and im using a wired connection)

Also I could only locate the hd vob files on the ps3 when streaming from tversity as they didn't show up in the folder when using media player 11 if thats normal?

Its not perfect I'll admit but its the best Ive found, you can only FF or RW at 1.5 speed, any quicker and it freezes. Also you cant stop and restart only pause. I've not tried streaming it from windows media as I use TVersity so cant advise on that I'm afraid.

Im also still learning what this program can do, and it does appear limited, but as long as you are gonna watch a film from start to finish with only toilet breaks its perfect :D

Just tried the fastfoward when playing from a external hard drive direct in the ps3 usb port and its the same so i guess we just wait for the next ps3 firmware upgrade for better options ;)

Ive been experimenting with PS Video 9, and using the 720p AVC setting it has changed a 6.5gb mkv and an 8.1gb mkv into two mp4 files one at 3.2gb and one at 3.8gb, which play happily on my ps3 - the first was a 720p to 720p convert and took about 7-8 hours - whilst the second was a 1080p to 720p convert and took about 13hours - which isnt an issue for me as the comps on all the time anyway acting as a home server and this doesnt stop it doing what else it needs to do.

The picture on the 720 to 720 I cant tell any obvious difference to the one I created using mkv2vob, but the sound is now only 2 channel stereo, with my amp being decent im hoping the synthesised surround from it will balance out the quality loss here and I can fast forward at any speed (even 120x), havent had a chance to fully test the other one yet - its the matrix so am waiting for it to get dark tonight before testing, I have to bear in mind the 1080 matrix wouldnt even play on my pc (Pentium D925 2 x 3ghz with 2 gb ddr2 667mhz ram).

Ill report back any further tests I do.

But first impressions are if speed/5.1 sound arent an issue use ps video 9 over mkv2vob.

Cool, I didnt want to start converting a load of mkv files and then go home to find I have no sound :) Does this keep the 5.1 sound if the mkv files has it?

I see the following text

Source filename: [C:\DOCUME~1\cdigby\LOCALS~1\Temp\The.Day.After.Tomorrow.2004.D
Theater.720p.x264.DTS-HDtop.dts] (.dts file)
Srce attributes: [5.1 ch, 24 bit, 48.0 kHz, 702629 frames, bitrate 1536.0 kbps]
Dest attributes: [PCM wav format, 1 ch, 32 bit float, 48.0 kHz]

I assume that its not keeping the 5.1 sound, can this be avoided?

Thanks

The few files I used this on all retained their 5.1 sound. I know there is an issue with some audio formats but not sure which.

Theres a link a bit further up to the original forum the software creator posted on, which should be able to help you more.

Further stuffinf around did result in a plaanle file via tversity.

The problem is I cant burn it to dvd it is slightly too big, I am trying an overburn. If this fails it will be a slow copy via wireless :(

HTF do people watch 1080p mkvs?
