Hello x8dVd,

About Pyramid Video....

I run a semi-professional video business. A spare room in my home is my control room. My main niche is producing 30-second commercials for cable broadcast. Next on the list are documentaries, including one for our Local Marine Base, which I have recently finished. Next on the list is editing home cam video for clients (yuk!) I will do weddings, but I hate them, and I keep my prices high to discourage them. Nonetheless, clients will pay my price! For those that want it, I author my videos with DVD Workshop, then burn to DVD-R with my pc burner. I bought the CyberHome to burn my videos in real time Mpeg conversion, but it looks like the reliability and such may prohibit its use for commercial projects. Just my luck, I always have to spend a small fortune to get equipment that satifies my requirements! I had planned to make multiple copies with the 1500.......but?

My editing system is non-linear and computer based, using Canopus hardware. Software is Adobe Premiere, RexEdit, Corel Xara, Photoshop, Sound Forge, and others....I run a P4 Windows XP computer. It is one of three pc's I built myself. Two of them are networked.

I work with all formats, including DV and Betacam SP.
My cameras are both 3-chip DV, with broadcast quality resolution.

I had a web page for several years, but seldom got any work from it, so I dropped it. I live in Yucca Valley, CA., which is about 25 miles from Palm Springs.

Update on the 'new' 2/13/04 posted firmware. It's not new. After updating, checking version number in Setup it's the same 12/29/03 version available since January.

Bad news for my 1500; it's starting to report disc errors on some DVD -R's I'd burned on my PC. These same discs played fine last week in the 1500. By 'same' I mean I tried to watch a movie I'd watched last week that had played fine...now I'm getting a disc error. I've been home recuperating from surgery this week and have been watching a lot of DVD's on the 1500. I theorize my actually using the unit for extended periods has burnt it out because it operates at what I consider to be too hot of a temperature. It's going back to Walmart by this weekend (when I'm feeling up to getting out of the house). I'm going to order the Liteon 5001 from CompUSA and take my chances on that model.

Good luck to all that try and stick out the Cyberhome 1500.

Just keep in mind CompUsa will charge you 15% if you open the box and want to return.. And they will mail you a check for the rest in about 10 days their refund policy stinks...

Yeah, CompUSA's return policy stinks. The main reason I never buy anything with moving parts from them. I may just pass altogether on a DVD Recorder for the time being. Wait 6 months until they're more widely available.

CompUSA will never be a major electronics player with their restrictive return policies.

I just bought the Cyberhome 1500 and so far so good. I was wondering if someone can tell me how to have chapters auto-added every 5 mins when I'm recording. I have been able to add markers manually but can't figure how to do it automatically like the manual says you can. The instructions are probably staring me in the face but I can't find them. Thanks in advance.

gys and gals
I have Replay TV and would like to copy from it to my cyberhome dvd? Is this possible? Replay says you can only copy to a VCR. There must be a way around this with a different hook up or something

I just baught a DVR 1500 2 days ago at Wally world and I must say that it has been everything that I expected..SO FAR.I have recorded 4 dvd's so far, 2 with dvdrw and 2 with dvdr disc, all will play in my son's PS2 and on my daughters Hitachi dvd/vcr combo player. After I baught it I did a search on google for Cyberhome dvd recorders and found this forum with a thread about it and it almost gave me stomach cramps when I started reading it.Thaught I had wasted my money but so far it is working as advertised but I do wish the clock setting was not in military time and when you put it on standby you would not have to do all of the remote key punching to get back into live mode.Oh well,I guess it aint too bad because I do get exceptionally good play back from recordings and store baught dvd's.I am satisfied if, it will hold up I will be even more satisfied.

Your RMA experience sounds like a good one. Interesting that your new unit is not in military 2400 hours time. What is the firmware version? I returned mine last week after it started acting up, giving 'disk errors' on discs that previously played fine. I'm interested in finding out if they hooked you up with newer, better firmware.

What exactly is the problem with military time? I like it. I used to set my VCR recording time wrong all the time. I would set 9:00AM instead of 9:00PM. With military time, that isn't going to happen. Unless you can't add or subtract 12 from a number.

For me, the military time only 'feature' added to the already overly complicated programming process of the 1500. Face it: the timer function was an afterthought on the 1500; it's main purpose is to do attended/live recording (i.e. live shows, backing up stuff off a camcorder or Tivo, etc...).

Still interested in Renderman's firmware version. Also wondering if the new unit runs any cooler?

Cyberhome has got a new firmware upgrade for the 1500 on their home page.I upgraded the firmware as well as the servo firmware and it now gives you the option of selecting 12 or 24 hour clock settings.Seems like they are definatly working on their problems. So far so good.I did make a coaster out of a dvd+r disc this weekend.I had set the timer to record and left the unit on and not in standy,I then switched the unit to standby when it started flashing to switch it to standby.I then turned it back on and it read the disk and formatted again, got an error right off the bat.Now the disk will not format, read or any thing.Do not do what I described above or you will end up with a coaster.Hope this helps someone.

Hey roothead, thanks for the heads up on the firmware upgrade. I hope it fixes a few minor problems I still have with the 1500.

I loaded the new upgrade and the servo firmware update last night on my Cyberhome 1500 and all seemed fine. I know it worked because I went through setup and it asked me if I wanted the 12 or 24 hr clock. I chose 24. I set the timer to record a couple of programs, turned standby on, and went to bed. When I got up this AM, the DVD was in standby, but when I went to turn off standby, the recorder froze. It has the Cyberhome screen on the TV and Cyberhome is displayed in the LCD screen on the recorder, but no buttons work. I used the remote then used the manual controls but it is frozen solid. I shut the power off in the back a number of times, but when I turned it back on it was still locked. Any thoughts anyone? Has anybody else had problems going to and from standby since loading the new firmware. Thanks in advance for any help.

Did you have a DVD in when you shut down for the night? I did that once and it locked up on me so bad I had to return the unit. I think there are some tricks to unlock it but I don't know what they are, sorry. The only "trick" I know is that I don't leave the Cyberhome overnight with a DVD in anymore. This kinda sucks for overnight timer recording.

Yes I had a dvd in the unit. I've done overnight recording before with no problems. The only thing I did differently was load the new upgrades last night.

Hi KOOLBREW,I read your post about upgradeing to the new firmware and went and tried a timer recording on mine.I just did a short recording of 15 minutes but did let it sit for about 30 minutes before I took it off standby and it worked as it should.I know that is not the same as letting the unit do its thing for a couple of hours and then stay in stanby the rest of the night but mine did work. Are you certain you applied the correct upgrade for X or P according to what is on the back of the unit? Also the servo upgrade must meet the specs that are mentioned in the instructions (must be U1229200301X OR HIGHER MUST NOT END WITH P) and the bottom numbers below this must be ( 116A or higher and must NOT start with S).If all of this was correct before you upgraded both firmwares it should work ok.I will do a timer recording at bedtime and let it sit overnight and report back tommorrow evening.BTW my unit is a USAX model.Later..

Hey roothead, thanks for the reply. Yes I checked the specs for the upgrades and I was definitely within the parameters. I also have a usax model. I left my unit OFF for the whole night last night hoping that when I got up this morning it would miraculously be working again. But no such luck, it is still frozen. I will be waiting to hear how you make out leaving your unit in standby all night. I've emailed Cyberhome support but haven't got an answer. I guess I shouldn't hold my breath.

KOOLBREW,it might just be my good luck but I did a timer recording last night for 2 hrs 45 min. and this morning turned it off of standby and everything worked like it was supposed to.Disc read, played and ejected.I was useing a memorex dvd+rw.I might try it again tonight with a dvd+r.If this thing is going to screw up on me I want it to do it while there is still warranty involved. What is the mfd date on your recorder?I think mine was mfd. in November 2003.Not that it makes any difference just wondering if there could be a connection with the people that are haveing problems and the mfd. dates.

Well, roothead, it's a moot point now. I returned the unit to Wal-mart this afternoon. Reading the replies in this thread, I decided not to get a 1500 replacement unit because it's just a roll of the dice whether the next one would work. I don't want to spend the rest of my life going to and from Wal-mart. I know DVD recording is a new technology, and you have to expect some problems, but what really disappointed me was Cyberhome's lack of effort in helping me resolve the problem. I emailed them numerous times but they never responded. Once they got my money, I no longer existed. I liked the 1500 when it worked and if they would have worked with me, I would have put up with a lot. I'm going to stay subscribed to this thread while I decide what to do next. It's a great forum with a lot of people sincerely trying to help each other. Cyberhome, this is what tech support should be all about!!!

KOOLBREW, exact same thing has happened to me. I've been doing a search on the web and found this forum. Sounds like there's no fix. I just emailed Cyberhome, I have received replies from them before. I'm still within 30 days at Walmart and am planning to exchange it. I had been happy with the unit so far. Knew I should have waited to let that firmware update age a little.

My story, late last night, 11:30pm, I upgraded to version U0226200401X firmware and server firmware version 128a. Everything seemed to go fine. System reset and showed the correct version numbers. I played a few DVDs, CDs, etc. to see what changed. I didnt re-enter any timed recordings. Put the unit into standby. This morning, powered it back on, screen displays Cyberhome logo, display says 'Cyberhome' but the unit is otherwise totally locked up. No button works, with particular emphasis on eject. I want my DVD back!

FYI: I have been using timed recordings very extensively over the month that I've had the unit and had never run into a problem.
