What FW do you have? First extract it, then load it onto the MS. If it load you will then know that you don't need to upgrade your firmware. Very rarely you do need to upgrade I doubt you will need to. I haven't updated my fat PSP ever since I flashed 3.71. I have games that use higher firmware and they run perfectly from the MS but I can't play them from disc. The purpose of the firmware version is only so that you can run games straight from disc and homebrew that requires it. For example, lets say you have CFW 3.71 and you want to run the Star Wars game you have. You won't be able to play it from disc because it requires the firmware update. Rule 1 about CFW, you never run OFW updates from the UMD or any OFW update of anykind; only CFW updates. That will guaranteed brick your PSP maybe into a full brick. I've never done that nor intend to because hundreds of threads exist that talk about full bricks when they ran the update. You will be able to play it from the MS though. If you have a large memory card creating iso's is the best method to use the PSP.

You don't get official firmware here, you get custom. If you have custom did you change the driver under the select button menu?

Brilliant, i have finally got my psp to 3.71 m33-2!

Now 2 questions... firstly can i now delete all the files on the memory card which are as follows

psp update ver 4.01,
m33 3.71 update ver 1.50,
1.50 kernel addon for 4.01,
1.50 kernel addon for 3.90 v2,
1.50 kernel addon for 3.80
mux update 2.0 by ksbo

secondly i would like to upgrade to a newer firmware to play my backed up iso's. Im thinking maybe 4.01? And could someone possibly please point me in the direction of the guide i need please?

And a massive thanks to Larry and numerous others who have helped me in my time of need.

If you have more than 1 MS, I would keep all the installation files. Especially if you don't have a magic gate card reader or a Sony device that you can connect your PC into. If you were to brick, how would you recover? That is something to consider. If the card is not large enough I would delete them but you need to have a dedicated MS only for Pandora. A 1GB card is sufficient for Pandora they are only worth about 10 bucks.

This is a great guide. Thanks to larrylje and the rest of the community who has kept this guide going. I read through all 66 pages just to make sure I knew enough not to brick my PSP. This was my first modding experience and it went great. Followed the directions EXACTLY and everything worked flawlessly. I now have CFW 3.71 M33-4 on my PSP and life is good.

I did have a couple of questions though. I read somewhere in the thread that you never saw a need to update from 3.71 M33-4 to a higher CFW. How do you play newer games that require firmware higher than 3.71? I was trying to play the demo's I downloaded from the PS Store before I got CFW and now I can't play some of them since I have 3.71 and not 4.05 anymore.

Also, if I try to download more demos from the PSN Store, will they brick my PSP or will they find out I am using CFW?

Thanks again for the guide and any help you can give!

Ok, so installed CTF on my friends PSP (Slim - God Of War, came with OF 3.95. with both Pandora and MMS.) The install is a complete sucess, but when i remove my battery (pandora) and put in his, the green light will not come on =s, i dont get this. they are both slim batteries, does the psp NEED to be turned on via AC adapter for the normal batttery to work?

P.S: the psp works when pandora and MMS are inserted. and works fine.

well I'm going to go over everything that has happened to me so far as a last resort before I just bash my psp to pieces.

I have a fat psp, it is fully bricked
I have a sony ms pro duo 2 gb, and another pro stick duo 2gb that was said to be able to be used to create a magic memory stick.
I have used vista and xp multiple times to create the magic memory stick. Now, I put the magic memory stick into my psp and THEN insert the pandora battery that I have, I have also inserted the pandora battery and THEN inserted the memory card. Two lights turn on for the memory stick on the left and a green light turns on for the power button. The screen remains black. Nothing has ever shown up.

Recently, I have attained a friend's psp (not cfw) to make the magic memory stick in case that was the problem. I went through the totalnewbiinstaller again and made a magic memory stick. I insert it into my psp and again the two lights on left come on and the green light turns on for the power but screen remains black. I am completely lost as what to do. If anyone has any idea please let me know.
Thanks

You can't recover a full brick. You say the MS and WIFI leds flash but it doesn't load into the CFW menu. The indication of a full brick is when the power led ignites and shuts off immediately but your leds do flash when you insert the MS. You don't have a brick just yet. Did you transfer the files to the MS correctly? Be sure to follow the guide painstakingly.

These is nothing more I can say, use UUV3 transfer the files manually. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/55/610313#4172594

Fantastic guide larrylje

I had a psp that was bricked and followed your guide using my FAT psp that has no CFW to make the magic memory stick on a Sony 8GB memory stick.
Then used my pandora battery to unbrick/install CFW , and now have the 371 M33-4 and it works perfectly now.

Thanks for such a great guide, I had previously tried a guide from pspmods, but it didn't work at all.

thx for the great guide. now Ima just have to wait for my stuff to come in. just wandering though...after using the universal unbricker and the m33 3.71 that is going to be updated to, do I need to update to a newer CFW? perhaps the 4.01 m33? and what is the step to do that? should I go straight to 4.01 m33 after the 3.71? or would I need to install the previous Custom firmwares between the 3.71 and 4.01? and why is the universal unbricker goes to 3.71 CFW and not any other firmwares?

Ok I am definitely no expert on the psp, but just take a look at "locobrown's" post. Explains a bit about the firmware and need to update.

I would imagine it depends what are you wanting to do with your psp.
Just upgrading firmware to original, or are you wanting CFW on the psp.
Or is your psp bricked? etc.

I tried this on my 1GB memory stick and it worked. Thanx
But when I try it on my 4GB memory stick, it doesn't work. It just shows a blank screen and a green light when I put the 4GB magic memory stick and then the pandora battery. How can I get this to work on a 4GB memory stick? I want to put more games in my psp. Please help.

I'm not sure about this but once you updated your psp slim or fat to a customfirmware you dont need to flash it anymore, just put your 4 gb memcrad in your psp, connect to computer and put the game in the root in the folder "ISO"x:\ISO\, you can put as many games on your memstick untill it is full.
I am not sure about this but i am only trying to help, hope it helps
