PS3 DVD Upconverting

I got a new HDTV recently and was looking to get an upconverting DVD player to go with it. After looking at the reviews, most sites are saying the Oppos are one of the best, but I was wondering how well the PS3 upconverting of regular DVDs compares to it or other brands out there? With the best Oppo costing over half the price of the cheapest PS3, I figured I might as well go ahead and get a PS3 to also have Blu-Ray and games as well if the DVD upconverting was comparable. The DVD upconverting quality was important to me since I already have quite a few DVDs with no plans to repurchase them again on Blu-Ray. Also, how well does the PS3 play DVD-R and +R movies?

The upscaling of DVDs on the PS3 is very good,i have had no problems with DVD-R and +R.

I watched Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End recently on both DVD and Bluray and let me say that the upscaled version looked almost as good as the bluray version. Bluray still had it beat but IMO the upscaler does it's job.

i have a panasonic lcd and the dvds thru the ps3 look awsome much better than the 360, would not spend money on somthin else as it prob couldnt get much better
