Having trawled the net endlessly and having read through endless flame/troll threads on other sites along the lines of "it does" or "it doesn't , I was wondering if anyone has an idea of exactly what XViD codec files the PS3 will play after the firmware 2.10 update.
It seems obvious to me that some XViD encoded files will play OK and others will not.
All of my DiVX files play fine ( logically ) but none of my XViD encoded files play - It starts up fine reading the disc, gives the file name and length correctly and labels it "DiVX" ( although it is XViD ) but then I get the message that "the data type is not supported" when I try to play it.
This happens when using dvd disc, cd disc, USB pen drive and even copying the file to the Sony HDD.
I've changed the fourcc code with no luck either.
Can those of you who have had success playing XViDs tell m what version of the codec you used and how it was encoded ?
I used Koepl's XViD 1.3 (stable release) and encoded with Auto GK as I did with my divx files so the ony tentative conclusion I can draw at the moment is that the PS3 is not compatible with XViD encodes using Koepl's 1.3 codec.
it sounds like you know what your talking about. anyway, i just started trying out this codec thing last night on the ps3 and yes, i have noticed that not all of "DivX" codecs will work. as an example, some series that i have on disc have some episodes readable by ps3 but other episodes are not, and they all share the same codec!! in any case it seems to me that only the 'earlier' version codecs seem to play fine but the videos made today with updated, more fancy codecs may be too much for ps3 for now. remember, most videos made today require a number of codecs to play which really puts us at an inconvenience.
sorry i don't have any remedies for you except to re-encode the files you would like, which i too have little time and patience to spare. i will try to find out what specific "codec" or "codecs" the ps3 does have and let everyone know.
I have added to a number of threads covering this topic quite extensively.
DivX and XviD are basically the same thing. They are an mpeg4 standard using h263 quantization. The PS3 is not really labelling it DivX, it is simply using the DivX decoder to play the file. I have had no compatibility issues at all, as long as you stay within profile guidelines (up to DivX full HD profile). That means video encoded outside those profiles will more than likely not play. This includes things like qpel, GMC etc.
bdeugau, what do you mean most videos today require a number of codecs to play? That doesn't really make much sense. This is how a media file is played (in basic terms)...
1) The container (avi, mp4, mkv, mpg) is split to separate the included video, audio, subtitle streams etc.
2) Each stream is sent to the appropriate decoder.
3) The media player receives the decoded data streams and plays them back.
There is only ONE codec (COmpressor/DECompressor) needed for EACH stream.
If the PS3 is saying "data type not supported", it isn't always the video stream that is the problem. If the audio stream is an incompatible format then the PS3 will not play the file. Use GSpot or AVIcodec to identify the streams in your media file.
Hey I am new to this and trying to still absorb all the info but I am using windows media player 11 the only one that worked for me as for streaming pics video music files with sound no problems using version 2.1 on ps3 I found a bit torrent episode of lost that I streamed from my network in hd xvid format 350mb and streamed great no problems the best picture i've seen I'm not using any other programs just the player streamed from network if that helps anybody
can you convert vob/ts files to xvid or just stream vob/ts files to play on ps3 yet or am I just saying jibberish I also do not have another os installed on ps3

some of the kids here like to download fansubbed shows from overseas and they require all kinds of codec packs just to get them running!
i just assumed that more than one codec might be used for certain videos.
with that respect, i have some issues when trying to playback a video file. at first the file would play no problem, but then the file would suddenly prompt "the data type is not supported" and then further deem the file unreadable. any of this common with anyone else?

Sounds like a corrupt data stream. How much of it does the PS3 play? Does the file play ok on your PC? If yes, which media player do you use?
