I just tried burning with no success. Tried with and without the layer break method on Memorex DVD+R DL at 2.0x. I keep getting the "An error has occurred eject the cd blah blah...." and the drive makes a bunch of noise. Im going to buy a cd lens cleaner or use a buddies DL burner to see if thats my problem.

Also, I forgot to mention that it did load the update, it just keeps getting that error. I didnt download it or anything, its my own copy.

SUCCESS!

I failed twice using Ridata DVD+R DL (Ritek) so today I bought Memorex DVD+R DL (also Ritek, so I don't know why Ridata didn't work) from OfficeMax (they are selling 3 packs for $7.99, I bought 3 of them for $24 with $10 off $20 coupon received in the mail.

US wii updated to 3.2U via internet (set to 6x speed but don't think 3x matters)
wii key 1.9g
ISO dumped from retail SSBB
Imgburn 2.4.0, no layer break, burn @ 2.4x
DVD burner build in HP laptop (2yrs old)

I want to thank everyone for posting their useful info, mine would not work without all your help....and please read last 10 pages, you will find all the possible solutions

Good luck to everyone else

i just though id mention that just cause the disc says "memorex dvd+r dl" blah blah blah doesnt mean they're the same disc. It just means its ONE of the MANY discs Memorex uses for its +R flavor media. As stated above its actually ritek/ridata media, so one batch mite work, and another mite not. it really depends on the disc code/ sku whatever they call it.

I had the same thing. I have had success with Memorex dl dvds in the past but for some reason my wii did not like them for this game. Even though they were from the same batch as the successful burns, I could not get past the loading screen w/o it making that god awful clicking. I picked up some Verbatim 8x dl (@ around $4 a disc :/ ) and it did the trick. Ive also read on here that people having trouble with Verbatim switched to Memorex and it solved their problem so go figure.

I have 3.1J right now, will it brick my wii if I dont update to 3.2J

well, there was the rumor saying that you should get the Verbatims that are made in Singapore -- if you want an easy way to look for them, look for the Verbatim +R DL that has a wrapper around the biscuit that has chinese on it as well as english. that happens to be the batch i got, and it worked well for me. not saying its a do all, end all, but it was the recommended batch as some of the batches made in other countries weren't working (india, taiwan, etc).

No, you don't need to update to 3.2J. I have 3.1J and it plays fine the US version. However, I did the update contained in the Japanese version.

I just wanted to share my experience with the 70% method in getting the smash bros brawl Retail disc working on a wiikey modified wii:

PROBLEM:
1. I already had 1.9g installed and the latest wii console update for U.S
2. I went ahead and installed the 1.9g update again, no unplugging and letting the update run through for the test past and real pass. After the real pass, I press the reset button and a homer simpson quote sounds off saying " you are all nuts"
3. After the reset reboots the wii. I put in the 1.9b disc and go through the test phase to 100%. I then go through the Real install but I unplug the power cord at 70% exactly.
4. I then plug in the cord and start the wii.
5. I put in the Smash Bros. Disc. It loads up.
6. I get to the screen that says "now loading..." with a spinning smash ball and it hangs. I try unplugging, restarting brawl, and I keep getting the same hanging screen over and over

SOLUTION:
1. Complete steps 1-5 above in the PROBLEM section...
2. I make sure the Brawl disc is already in the wii, unplug the wii , plug the power cord back in, press the ON button.
3. At the black screen where it says "Press A", DONT PRESS A. Instead press the reset button. Let it boot back up to the screen that says "Press A".
4. Press the reset button again...reset the wii a total of 10 times or more in a row.
5. On the final reset, you should be able to boot Smash Brawl, get pass the loading screen, and it will prompt you to create a save file and your golden! I confirmed I was able to play story mode just fine!

Thought this might help because I have been attempting to get this wiikey corruption method to work for 3 days now!!

Good Luck!

i did a no no and bought nexxtech discs at circuit city tonight. I saw some sonys 36 bucks for 3 discs at best buy and said f--- that. But i shouldve just been patient, yes i did get one disc of 3 to work so far but that really just sucks. The 5 back came out to 20 bucks, so its only worth it if i get the other 2 discs to work.

first disc burned with nero straight at 8x- didnt work
second disc burned with img burn at 4x- and break set, didnt work
third disc burned at 8x with img burn and break set, works

wiikey 1.9g (also had some issues, had to reflash twice tonight)
launch wii

get -R media best i would say are verbatims, dont ask, just do it.

i would contest that for a few reasons on how -R DL treat layer breaks. that and the fact that most have gotten +R DL to work.

either way, glad to see you've got it going and that -R DL actually works for some (though I think most of us i actually find it harder to find -R DL).

Just wondering if anyone out there has gotten the wizard iso to work with a pal wii with wiikey, if so were there any special steps you had to apply to get it to work?

Interesting, Ill have to buy a couple of Verbatim discs to see if they will do the trick. It might also be my burner, its roughly around 3+ years old. Has done me pretty good and its made by Sony.

Yo, any way to put brawl on 2 SL discs? Im wondering because i have no cash flow and dont have DL discs.... feed back would be kewl :D
doesn't really work that way. so "no", for now.
i read some thing about a guy using a multi rar ... he didnt further explain though.... care to enlighten me?
not quite for the reason you're proposing. that was referring to someone who needed to move it to another (better) computer to burn. he already had the full iso. so they were telling him to multi-rar it to two files so he could put the them on data DVDs simply to move it to the next computer. at that point he would recombine the two rar files to recreate the original 8+GB iso file. (which would then be burned on a DL disc.)
ok thanks, i understand now. To bad that couldnt work though .. turning it into a multi disc game .. 1 disc single player the other multi :D
I have heard that you can use WiiScrubber to get the full version in one SL DVD. However, I believe the adventure mode won't work, but it's a good way to be able to play versus mode if you only have SL DVDs.
as i do the scrubber .. what sections do i take out that are not needed .. i just want the multiplayer... im then going to make an other with just single player... if you have done this a run down would be awesome.
I was able to test this and confirm that it works on SSBB (although I'm sure it's already been confirmed previously).

Here is what to do to get Brawl working on a Single Layer DVD...

1. Obtain a copy of the full DVD 9 version of Brawl.

2. Obtain a copy of WiiScrubber. You can find it here: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?download=1863

3. Obtain a copy of key.bin (I won't give a link to it as I believe it can get me and the forums in trouble, but you can definitely find it on newsgroups and maybe torrents. Just look around.

4. Make sure you have WiiScrubber and key.bin in the same directory (make sure they are both in the same folder) as WiiScrubber won't open unless you have key.bin

5. Run WiiScrubber and click "Load ISO"

6. Find the SSBB iso on your computer and open it.

7. You should now see a bunch of stuff such as "WII DISC", "partition00", "partition01", etc.

8. You do not have to open any of that stuff. Simply click "Clear and Save ISO"

9. The program will not overwrite the DVD9 version, it will make a second .iso file for Brawl. This means you don't need a copy of the DVD9 version since you will have one when the program is done scrubbing. This also means that you will need to make sure there is at least 4.5GB available for the new iso.

10. Once the program is done, take the new iso and burn it like normal on a regular DVD.

Hopefully this helps some people who just want to get started on the versus mode and can wait on the one player adventure mode.

I've read of PAL success in this thread.

What exactly do you call special steps? i.e. IMO there are "special" steps to take in any case when playing ANY out of region game and this thread is dedicated to those...

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/523776

If you are aware of region brick etc. and how to avoid it then all you need to do is read up through this thread about what ppl are saying with regards to media choice, burning speeds and layer breaks etc.

It's not really that much trouble once you find the key.bin file. And the problem with DL disks is not only that they are more expensive, but they also don't have as high of a successful burn rate as regular DVDs, so some people end up going through 5 DL DVDs and still can't get it to work.

Got my backup working just fine. Thanks for all the great tips on this thread. This is what I did.

What I have:
NTSC Wii Console 3.2 frimware
WiiKey with 1.9G

1. I updated my Wii to lastest firmware 3.2 via WiFi.
2. Burned SSBB ISO at x2.4 speed using ImageBurn v2.4 on Verbatim DL +R. Didn't set the layer the brake.
3. Then did the update on the SSBB game itself.
And the game works just fine. WiFi Brawl works great also.

Thanks for all the tips on this thread.

i think it just takes a lot more resources and a better computer to burn a DL disc. that's part of the issue -- some have older model burners that need firmware updates, and an unfortunate few will never get a new firmware update. and some people don't even have a DL DVD burner at home, period. if the computer still works for most other things...why get a new one just yet? but all that can contribute to burn issues on top of just the media.

then there is the broke and lazy problem... :P j/k

My Wiikey has never been updated to 1.9b. Do I need to update it to 1.9b before I update it to 1.9g or can I just go ahead and update it right to 1.9g?

my Wiikey was at 1.2

then I downloaded the 1.9gBootUSA.ZIP from the "firmware" page ... and I just jump directly from 1.2 to 1.9g ... never used 1.9b
