I've made about 30 successful backups with Shrink 3.0 and Nero 6. And I've searched all of the posts on the subject, but my problem is way beyond anything I've seen. My machine is taking 5-6+ hours to rip a movie at 30% compression. At 0%, it took 4+ hours. I only have a 866 MHz processor, but c'mon, 6 hours? I added more memory and am at the max of 256 for my chipset. The additional memory did not help. Is there something else that could be going on? I've got an NEC 1300A burner, and am burning in about 15-20 minutes. Thanks for any ideas.

Hi burngirl, Yes your total time seems excessive. But the time depends on many things working together. Some of this you may already know and have tried but I'll list a few. Maybe someone else will add to this post. Your processor speed is somewhat at the lower end but I don't think its the only problem.
1. Defrag your hard drive and remove any useless junk on it.
2. Set your burner on secondary master, not slave.
3. Make sure you are not multi-tasking at same time you are ripping or burning.
4. Your HD may only be a 5400 rpm drive which will slow you down. Newer ones are aleast 7200.
5. Your ram is also low but if you are maxed out
you can't do much with that.
6. Shut down any programs running in the background at start up including antivirus to see if that helps. Hope this helps you. Jerry

Hi Burngirl,

This a very long hours.
I have copies 30 dvd's and my average is more
than one hour together.incl, extra;s
and compressing 60%.
(schrink 3.0 45 minutes-Nero 6.0 25 minutes)
and i am using P4 1.8 Gh . Probably this is
the difference with you but I am not sure.

Regards,
Aniceday

Yeah, i'd just like to repeat (i think ;)) Oriphus' question, did you actually burn 30 movies at 6 hours a piece?

If anyone deserves the title Burn Girl, it's definately you! Awesome effort.

How long does it take to rip and compress the movie (how long does dvdshrink take)?

866 is slow, and so is the amount of ram, so that could be the only thing holding u up, but i doubt it, and for some reason i read your first post as you had been doing them fine and now they've blown out to this much??

Okay, so I have the patience of a saint... Oriphus, I didn?t know you had a sense of humor under that black hood! I was so happy that I got the whole process down, I wasn't worried about the time... I thought it must have just been the 866, but I?ve read posts from people using the same processor, and they?re somewhere around an hour. To answer some of the questions:

-I installed a second, storage only, 7200 drive. The first movie I ripped to that drive was no faster, so its not a defrag, or HD speed issue.

-I tried closing down all other applications before ripping - didn't make a difference, which is why I didn't think it was only a slow processor causing the problem.

-The 4-6 hours is the time DVD Shrink takes ? the actual burn with Nero is only about 15 minutes.

-My burner is set on cable select, positioned on the second pin on the cable. If I?m right (which is usually not the case), that means the computer sees it as a slave. Could a secondary master setting actually make that much of a difference?

And ? I?m running ME? I know, I know, dump it and get XP? but could that be part of the problem?

Is there any sort of setting on Shrink that I could have wrong causing this kind of problem?

I appreciate everyone?s help? and next year, its time for a new machine, but I?ve got to try to make this thing at least bearable in the interim. This is going to drive me to drink (more) if I can't make it better. I'm thinking maybe I should try DVDecrypter and see if its still slow.

To be honest, i think its more likely to be firmware issue with the drive you are attempting to rip/compress the disc from. The burning seems to be fine, 15ins is standard for a 4x Writer. What dirve are you using. If its a Pioneer, there are upgrades in my signature for your firmware. The other option is to enable DMA on your drive.

On another point, drinks great, but let it drive you to it. Do that yourself by taking a drink before sitting down at the computer. Its the only way i keep sane with computers, in the eveing anyway. Hello there my stella.....come to Chris hmm......

Burngirl, Its not windows ME. Thats what I use and most of my total times for full disc-around 1 hr give or take 15 min. Like Oriphus said, maybe firmware related but I figured since your burn was about 15 minutes, that was probably Ok. Has to be something strange to get that 6hr time. I never liked cable select for my systems but I sort of doubt thats it either. Very odd Jerry

Also another good trial combination would be Anydvd and CloneDVD working together to see if their time is the same. Jerry

Ok, this will rule out a lot of the factors. I have a 600mhz computer, 256meg ram, windows ME, and a 5400 rpm harddrive, and it takes between 15 and 60 minutes to rip (depending on compression ratio). BTW, using pioneer 105.

Actually, frimware is more liekly to affect the ripping of the disc rather than the burning in this case. With RPC 2 protected firmware, the rip speads are vastly reduced for the sole purpose of putting people off ripping DVD's. By get an RPC 1 firmware update you can enhance the ripping speeds.

Thanks Oriphus, I see what you mean. That 6hr time just seems way out in left field. Hope she finds the trouble, I just want to know for future reference. Jerry

Thanks for all of the help. The post from sly_61019 concerning the speed of his rip/burn has sufficiently motivated me to get this thing working right. This weekend I will sit down with a bottle of wine, set the burner to a secondary master (thanks,Jerry746), and check my DMA setting. Oriphus - I'm using an NEC 1300A drive. And the rest of what you said concerning RPC1 firmware... I need to go hit the search bar before I can even begin to understand what you're talking about. Where the heck did you learn all of this stuff anyway?? I'll post what I, if anything, changes. Again, thanks everybody, I really appreciate the help!!

Hi burngirl, You learn by asking questions like you are now. I have been in service related businesses for over 30 years. The most important thing I learned is to say (I don't know the answer) But I'll always try to find out. I read many of these posts even if the problem is one that I don't have. Just keep trying and keep the 2nd bottle on ice. Jerry

Hey Burngirl, since you have Nero 6, you could try running a cd/dvd speed spin up/spin down test under Nero utilities. Mine (16x dvd-rom drive) improved dvd read times from 3-4x speed to 8+ after I installed latest aspi 4.7x from adaptec. Strange thing is I can rip at the higher speeds only after running the spin up/down test. This way, dvd decryptor takes about 12 minutes typically.

Results from this weekend?s fiasco ? problem fixed. How? I haven?t the slightest idea! I tried everyone?s suggestions, and even reinstalled ME. Nero speed test showed the drive reading a DVD at 8x, but DVD Decrypt showed a rip speed of .1x. Yes, you read right, one tenth. So, after the second bottle of wine (truth be known, I bought a box for this adventure, and am estimating the bottle equivalency), I had enough. I formatted my C: drive and reinstalled ME from scratch. After that, DVD Shrink completed a backup without compression in about 30 minutes, and DVD Decrypt showed a speed of around 3.5x. Of course, now my ATI card and printer aren?t working correctly, but I?ll get a grip on that. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, I really appreciate the help. And if anyone has any thoughts as to why this fix worked, I?d love to hear them. I want to try and avoid making the same mistake that put me in this situation in the first place. Happy Holidays!

Hi Burngirl, Congrats on your success. From reading your last post and what you did, I would think you had some sort of software conflict. As you add your other software back to your computer, only do one at a time. Then do a test rip and check speed. One of the programs may start to conflict with your speed again. Just a guess. If you are lucky, it won't show up again.
Jerry
