I currently have the PS3 connected to the TV via HDMI, then HDMI to the Home Theatre sounds great, except i dont seem to be getting surround sound when using the PS3. If i watch TV or a DVD on the HT, i get full surround sound coming out, but regardless what i play on the PS3, it only comes out in 2ch.
I also have an optical lead knocking around and was thinking maybe connecting PS3 to HT via Optical would solve this?
Basically id like to know whats the best set up i can achieve with the equipment ive got.
Im new to all this HD HDMI PCM etc etc stuff, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
If your home theater receiver has both HDMI input and output, I would hook it up like this:
PS3 --(HDMI)--> Home Theater Receiver --(HDMI)--> TV
Optical is great as well but you would loose the sound going to the TV and only have the Home Theater for audio, whereas this will allow both to work perfectly.
As for why the surround sound wasn't working, I think the PS3 was detecting the TV's 2ch audio and sending that, so after it leaves the TV your Home Theater is only receiving 2ch instead of the full 5.1ch.

Ok, the HT system has HDMI input and more importantly output, so go with the plan that I had stated above. Its quite a simple fix you just gotta change the order of devices that receive the signal from the ps3. You have it like PS3 to TV then HT, it should be PS3 to HT then to TV.
The only problem with that is that audio output from anything but the PS3 wont be played. The only way to fix that is to run an optical cable from the TV to the HT.
Finally got it the right way round, Id run into the problem of no audio from TV using Option 2 before and couldnt figure out where i was going wrong! Doh!
