Try and find a program that will rip the DVD's to an .avi format.

If you're ambitious, try a program called Handbrake which will give you .h264 videos in the form of .mp4 . These files will be smaller than .avi's but take much longer to rip. The quickest way to do it is to rip the DVD via DVD Decrypter and then process it through AutoGK. That should give you a .avi and shouldn't take longer than 2-3 hrs. depending on your computer. Here's the Guide. The only thing you should do differently is use DivX instead of XviD because the PS3 doesn't play every XviD file so to be on the safe side, use DivX

After I use DVD Shrink and get the Vob files, i use joinVOB to join all the files that have the actual movie on them and use Tversity to copy them to the ps3 hdd. Works like a charm for me. For mkvs, I first convert to Vob using mkv2vob, then join vob (if there mkv file came broken in two pieces), and copy.
