I've acquired a rip of a blu ray movie which is approximately 3.74gb, the only way I could get it to burn to disk was to use the UDF (universal disk format) it reads the DVD fine and even the sub-folder that the video is contained in shows up but the video itself doesnt show up; not even as unsupported video file.

Is this a format, size, or simply a problem with the movie file that is causing this?

What format is the movie in? If it's MKV it may not recognize it. For example WMV would be unsupported and it's so common that sony recognizes it but then tells you it won't support it. If it's MKV it would just treat it as if you have a .asdlfasdflasdjfl file. i.e.:"WTF?"

Yes it is an mkv, at least that explains that part. If I convert it to an mp4, divx, or and avi and put it on a disk will the PS3 play it properly even with its large size? I know they've had problems with videos larger than 2gb's on media servers.

One last question, can the data transfer rate of a DVD support the 1080p quality video at full speed or will it have to be copied onto the HDD in order for it to play properly?

use mkv2vob program to convert your mkv... it has no quality loss and a better chance of you keeping your file within size limits. but if you really insist in using any other formats like avi... i suggest you use a splitter to split the mkv then convert accordingly since theres a 2gb limit on that. before you even burn it might be a good idea to see if you can play it over the network. then if you can play it off a usb stick

I would use mkv2vob but theres only one problem, which is that doesn't as of yet support subtitles, and the only audio for the movie is in Japanese. If there is another lossless HD converting program out there that does support subtitles I'd be more than obliged if you pointed me in the right direction.
