Please help. I have no trouble making backup dvd's and playing them on my computer or DVD player with DVD Shrink and Nero. I want to be able to play the files straight from my hard drive to my ps3 that are created with DVD Shrink. When I access the files on my PS3 I can only play them chapter by chapter. Is there a way to play them all at once? Can I change the settings on DVD shrink to make just one big file? It doesn't seem like I can make a video playlist on my PS3 either. Thanks!

Hello ksteve300, I would recommed that you re-encode the files to a different format like DivX or AVC/h264. Another advantage would be that it would consume less HDD space. I'm not sure how many movies you are talking about but even a 500gb HDD would only hold about 110 DVD movies. Using a more efficient codec like DivX or AVC could effectively double or even triple that amount with very little quality loss.

Most DVD's will be larger than 4gb, the PS3 only supports external media with FAT partitions so that means the file size limit is 4gb. If you were to extract the mpeg2-PS from the multiple VOB files in the DVD directory structure in order to play it as a single file then it will probably be too large to play from an external HDD. This also supports the idea of re-encoding even further.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. :-D

Thanks for the reply. I am not really familiar with converting DVD to DivX but will look into it. Hopefully it will be easy to create one file the PS3 could recognize and play. I was not planning on putting more than 30 or 40 movies on this Hard Drive. I still can't believe there is not a way to have the PS3 play the multiple video files that shrink creates one after another like my computer can but maybe that is just a limitation of the systems video player or my savy. Thanks.

The PS3 does not have a playlist function for video. So you are right that it can't be done.

In regards to DVD to DivX conversion there are plenty of guides available. Some are posted here at Afterdawn. It might be good to visit the DivX website too.

I'd suggest you not use DivX though. Its crappy and old. The PS3 can play H.264 in MP4 so go that route. In order to get a DivX file to look as good as H.264, you'd need to make it like 2-3 times the size, which goes against the point of shrinking it.

atomicxl is right, h264 will give a better result quality wise. However, it also takes at least 3 times longer to encode. If you have the time, you would definitely be better off using h264 (or otherwise known as AVC).

I disagree a little that DivX is crappy and old. Yes, it's an older codec than h264 but that doesn't make it useless. mpeg2 is older and that is what is used on DVD's. I think if done right, and at higher bitrates you can get a nice looking DivX video at 30% - 50% the size of the original.
