Hi , Ive come across a ps3 with asticker on it that reads "console modified for IDU use only" on it ,
question 1 Whats it all about
2 why wont display any thing on stanard def tv or play games
3 is it software or hardware modified
4 can it be reversed
if any can enlighten me on this this would be great ,thank you in advanced

1. Ok IDU stands for Internal Demonstration Unit or something along those lines.
2. Have you tried holding in the power button for 5 seconds until it beeps?
3. I believe they are only software modified (they have a stripped down firmware)
4. Nope not until you can rewrite the firmware (may be possible with the infectus modchip but it would just be easier to buy a new ps3).

Ok basically it's a demonstration console used by sony. We have one at work and it says RDU on the back of it (Retail Demonstration Unit). Our RDU can only play games and certain content and demos. It can go through the xmb partially but can't change settings or sign up to psn. It also will not install a system update from a game (will refuse to boot the game until the sony rep comes in and manually updates it). It also will start playing videos automatically after sitting idle for a few minutes. the staff can't even get in and change the settings (ie. delete gamesaves etc.) The only thing we can do is put retail games into it and it will play them but thats it. Thats basically all it is a stripped down version of a ps3.
