I'm having problems with DVD Shrink v3 beta5 not compressing a dvd down to 4.7GB. Everything is set on auto, i press backup and when it's finished the VIDEO_TS folder on my hd is 5.9GB in size. The original dvd was 6.8GB. Why is this?

Also, after pressing backup, there is a small window which comes up in which you can make the backup region free and change the provider name. I recently backed up a region 1 disc (I live in region 2), using DVD Decrypter and Clone DVD. The original does not play in my normal dvd player, but the backup does. Does this mean that Clone DVD makes it region free automatically, and what does Nero Recode 2 do?

Thanks in advance,

Chasin,

I use the same DVDshrink version you have. Mine always tells me when my backup is to large to fit on a 4.7 gig disk. Are you sure everything is set correctly?

Yep, it sets the ratios automatically as soon as i open the disc or the hd files, and the 4,464MB line is always green with no red showing. It's set for a 4.7GB disc in the preferences menu. I've gone over the settings a few times. I think it's really odd that it should compress some but not enough.

Hmmmm, it's kind of reassuring to know that i'm not going mental and someone else has encountered the same problem... Can anyone help with the second part of my original post, the bit about the region coding?

Thanks in advance,

I am pretty dure DVD Decrypter has a default option to make the disk region free. You answered your own question pretty much I think. Nero Recode 2 is almost the same as DVDshrink. The same programmer that makes DVDshrink also makes Nero recode 2. They both do the same thing but I havent tried it yet. supposed to be sweet.

Hi chasin_h,
Dvd Shrink can only compress a movie so far. It will still create video files, however they will be too big to fit on a disc.
For example, Im looking at Pirates of the Caribbean, after analysis:

1. The size bar has red showing above the 4,464 MB limit, indicating 5,098 MB. That would be the resulting size after compression, if no further action is taken.

2. "Ratio" cannot be applied to the main movie, menu or extras as they are fully compressed already.

3. Selecting Backup! results in the following message:
The current DVD is too big! If you continue, you may not be able to burn the resulting file. Please ensure video is set to "Automatic" compression or try to disable some audio streams.

As Video was set to automatic and removing selected audio streams still did not reduce the size enough, I elected to re-author this movie, keeping the main title only and one audio stream.

Nero Recode 2 is a program that has similar and a bit more advanced features than DVD Shrink. Recode 2 also has a burn function. Recode 2 does not decrypt, so a program like DVD Decrypter must be used with Recode when working with an encrypted DVD.

Yes, DVD Decrypter does have a region free patch in IFO mode, whatever that is, but there is no mention of it in file or ISO mode. I use those two modes for DVD-9 and DVD-5 respectively. Also i realise that if the bar is not totally green in DVD Shrink then it won't fit onto a blank, assuming you have it set to compress the disc for burning on to a 4.7GB blank. That is not what i am referring to, i am talking about everything looking perfect for compression to 4.7GB, then the files being 5.9GB in size!

I think i need some clarification on exactly what decrypting entails - when DVD Decrypter sets to work on a disc what exactly is happening, decryption, removal of DVD region, or both?

Thanks,
chasin_h

ok baseing this thread of terror of shrinking a dvd down to size is based on my findings of personal use of the program call DVD Shrink 2.3 i have found some pretty kool ways to do this for one get to know all of the functions of the programs you use. as for it will help you understand and create less confusion in the end. 3 with out changing any of the settings to the options list. after you first install the program called DVD Shrink 2.3. i have been able to take a 7gig dvd down to a 2.7gig with no probs at all. just got to know the program is all. for instance you have to weigh out whats more important keeping the trailers and extras and bs! versous space. i like to cut to the chase and watch the darn movie from dead begining to the dead end. so the first thing i do is i run dvd shrink// let it do its thing with the cache// then i choose open disk button// then reauthor button at top of the screen// then at the bottom look for anything that says title 1 click and drag that into the new dvd directory folder// then choose the start/end button advance the top screen to the desired postion of the movie i like it to be rite after all of the beging credits and the same to the bottom one i rewind the movie all the way before the ending credits once doing that i then click ok// then in the compression screen and choose the level 10 compression and sometimes you can choose your audio format french or spanish if for english only then you won't need the them extra lanuages that eat up alot of your disk space so take the check marks out of there// then now choose back up! put a check mark in the box for region free// click browse for the target location that you want your movie to go to. on the harddrive and click ok// LEAVE THE PROVIDER ID BLANK UNLESS SOMEONE CAN TELL ME WHAT THAT MEANS. AND THEN CLICK OK// that is all i know with this program and it does a flawless job on making dvds not a skip or anything its one of the best that i have seen so far. now all i need is to find out how i can trasnfer this dvd to 1 cdr disk. it sure would be a great thanks. i hope i have helped in any way here.

Hi chasin_h,

Generally you'll have compression to play with if you had set yourself on ?Automatic".
Probably, what you should have done was to get rid of a few foreign languages under "Audio" (unless you speak Eastern Himalayan Yak and wish to keep it) for all the headings, "Menus", "Main Movie? and "Extras". Then physically compress just your Extras and Trailers to either maximum, using "Ratio", and then moving the Purple Bar to the left or, by clicking "Still Pictures". Then, if you need, reduce your "Main Movie," again, click "Ratio," then slide the purple line more to the left until you get about 1/8 of an inch of gray at the end of your green bar - that?s all, nothing else, honest, you'll have it done :-)

If in the very rare case that you have reached max-compression in your regular window, then the most excellent directions provided by jays_xp would be the way to go.-

BTW, the reason that your backup played (the one from region 1) when the original wouldn't is that left to itself, DVDShrink will make what ever it decrypts, region free (a good thing :-)

My close Buddy, the "Fastman, Frank" gave you the "Skinny" on Recode.

AND as for the I.D. Provider Box, it's just something that is read by the DVD Player - put the movie's name in there, I do, treat like the discs label. I put my Grandsons name there so that it didn't get it mixed up with his friends' from down the street - to know who's is who's, just pop it in the player -

Lastly, you kept writing 4.7GB for the size you selected for Shrink, Shrink is set to adjust that figure to 4.46GB. A better number is 4.36GB for other programs who don?t adjust for you. That?s the maximum amount that can be put on a 4.7 DVD disc. The reason I suggested a little gray with your green bar is so that you?re not writing to the very ?brittle? edge of your disc.

Try again, I?ll bet your DVD will fit this time.

By the way, Welcome to the Club :-D

hey ScubaPete, just wanted to thank you! on the review about my suggestions on the DVD Shrink 2.3.
ya sure know how to make a man feel welcome! i would also like to mention that my findings or someone else's findings that i have expierenced is not only in a rare occation it is also for those who are like me that don't care much for ratings extra laungage support and the kool stuff in the begining of their movies or tat the end of the movies. it's also great for consuming space for perhaps maybe another movie as well pending on size of movie might beable to get as much as up to 2 movies instead of 1. for lazy people such as myself. enjoys spending alot less time getting up for a movie then to just sit there and watch 2 in a row. oh and thank you for clearing up that part about the id provider thing. i'll have to remember that one for the next time i cut another cd.
cheers to everyone! here hope that i have been any help to all. hope everyone is doing just fine. to all here have a great day!

pete thank ya! have been great help!
