My telly's HDMI input is actually a DVI socket with a DVI audio in.
I have bought an HDMI to DVI adaptor to link my PS3 to the telly. The picture is fine, but I have no audio, which I understand is to be expected after connecting this way.
From Googling this situation I am lead to believe that it is possible to still use the composite audio connections by changing the Sound Settings on the PS3. However, this does not work for me - I still have no audio.
Also, it has been suggested that, as the PS3 has a Digital Out, I would be able to buy a Digital Audio Optical lead and connect this to the DVI Audio In. Is this true and if so would this cable be the one....http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=35921&doy=9m3#overview
So I went out and bought a digital optical cable but I still can't get any audio when trying to play the PS3 in HD.
This is becoming an expensive exercise as I have had to buy an HDMI cable (£35), an HDMI to DVI adaptor (£20) and now a digital optical audio cable (£15) and I am no further forward.
The whole point of buying the PS3 was to play in HD but there is no point playing the games without any audio!!
So it seems I have to connect my PS3 into the DVI In. So I bought a HDMI to DVI adaptor and have used that to get an HD picture (or so I think!). But as expected I do not have any sound as audio cannot run through DVI.
So I tried using the AV cable supplied with the PS3 and linking that to the composite on the back of the TV set and telling the PS£ to go to composite for audio. Alas, no sound.
So i bought a digital optical cable and am running that from the PS2 to the DVI Audio In connection on the base of the TV next to the DVI In. I then asked the PS3 to go there to pick up the audio but no luck!
To be honest, I cannot see on the TV anywhere to tell it to pick up audio from the DVI settings. If I tell the TV to go to HD mode I get equalizer settings, balance, Delta Volume etc. I cannot see anywhere where I tell it to go and hunt out the DVi audio.
Many thanks for your continued help and advice. I am close to tears on this but you are just about keeping my sanity in place!!
Just to be clear - I do get sound on the PS3 when I use it as Ext 1 and linked through the composite so I know both TV and PS3 have audio when NOT linked via HD.
And I do not have any other HD equipment/devices either
Anjelica, I haven't seen any TV's that actually have optical in. I have seen quite a few with optical out.
That link you provided isn't a direct link to your user manual. I am sure I don't need it anyway.
The connection next to your DVI plug is more than likely a 3.5mm mini jack. The exact same type used on the end of a set of headphones. I have a Sharp Aquos LCD and it has that exact connection next to the DVI input. I don't use it (I use HDMI from my PS3 to the TV and optical from PS3 to an AV receiver) but I know 100% that this is what it is.
What you need to do is purchase a RCA (Red & White) Female to 3.5mm stereo mini jack adapter (these usually cost about $2).
Connect your AV multi (supplied with the PS3) into the female end of the new adaptor and then plug the 3.5mm mini jack into the socket next to your DVI connection.
