Dont worry about it, as the last poster mentioned, if it actually leaves a mark on your hand, then its cause for worry.
Mine does the same thing.

Just make sure you keep it in a well ventilated area and it will be just fine, most of our PS3's heat up like that but its no cause for alarm, it just means the cooling system is doing its job by pushing all the hot air out.

THX AFTERDAWN TEAM...
We here at Afterdawn always like to help people 12005043, but your question can result in only one of two answers. 1) That it is normal... Or 2) That it is not normal, meaning you will need to return/service your PS3.
You requested that we don't say "RETURN YA PS3"... So that really only left us with the answer "1" option. I agree if people write "return your PS3" and that's all they write, that's about as helpful as asking a Monkey. However, let's hope that they can back that up with some reasoning.
In regards to your problem. I find that my PS3 also runs quite hot but that is to be expected from such a powerful machine. Can I ask, do your fans appear to be running normal? When it's been on for a while do your cooling fans switch on? Also, are there any strange odours coming from the PS3? That could indicate something has blown inside.

It's a bad idea, they are known to overstress the stock fans and burn them out. As long as you got a warranty and your stock fans are working fine don't bother with external fans. And if you must don't buy one that goes over one of the stock fans, get a front mounted one.
