Vista SP1 update coming tomorrow

article published on 17 March, 2008

Microsoft Vista SP1 will be available online tomorrow for download and on Wednesday in stores, reported Microsoft. The long awaited service pack was released as an RTM version in February but is now available to all genuine Windows Vista users. You can directly download the service pack from the Microsoft Download Center or as an optional update through Windows Update. The company did ... [ read the full article ]

THere are a lot of improvements and most of which are at the core. There are speed improvements, security, and compatibility. They made the UAC less intrusive to name a few. The only drawback is when you first install it Vista has to re-optimize itself so some people complained of slower boot times, but after a few days or so that got better. I noticed considerable speed increases when it came file access and transfering from drive to drive and I think it utilizes my network more efficiently. There was a 58 page PDF of the changes in SP1 that I downloaded with the service pack.

600+ modifications/patches.. and a new list of applications that will not work with it.

The new media player is riddled with drm.

I guess I just don't see the big "incompatibility" problems others seem to whine about. I Run Vista Ultimate 64bit on my home computer and my work laptop and work Desktop have Vista Ultimate 32bit and I have not had any problems that couldn't be easily solved with an update. As far as the DRM goes I guess that doesn't affect me because no one has come knocking on my door saying I can't play my music or movies. All works fine.

my cousin kept telling me his desktop was crap.
it was about the same specs as mine, but his has a faster cpu.
the only big difference was his was running vista, mine xp.
i figured he just got used to his dual-core laptop,
and its 2gb ram, so 512mb ram and 3+ghz pentium was nothing.

not so.

the vista computer was noticably slower than my machine.
my computer is about 7 years old, no hardware upgrades at all.
also, his printer doesn't work with his desktop,
despite being labeled "vista compatible."
i'm just hoping sp1 includes a fix for his printer.

The biggest glitch with Vista involves users with Nvidia cards. For whatever reason, once you install the Nvidia drivers, your maximum allowed screen resolution drops dramatically. This is inexcusable as this glitch affects SLI users as well. I hope that Vista SP1 addresses this.

Turn off all the eyecandy and animations. It speeds up that crap a lot.

Vista wouldn't allow my buddy to download family video from his digital camcorder. The DRM police slapped him on the wrist for trying to make a home movie. I guess the OS thought that he was trying to transfer a pirated movie that he captured in a theatre. He had to switch to XP just to get the video of his kids school play onto a hard drive. That's is inexcusable IMO. An OS shouldn't prevent me from doing things. That's the governments job.

Actually, if you have enough video ram (256 and up) leave Aero ON, since it offloads the display functions from the CPU to your GPU, which most of the time is not doing anything else. Makes the whole interface seem to run faster.

Heh Windows XP64&Slackware for a few more years for me.

i dont see any reason to update besides Coperate Shceems. i like Irony for the most part, how Vista fails in the Gaming Area. and the games That are Vista only, get shotdown.

DX10 Should be on XP but its not. thats a Mere Load of BS.

Yes, Good for those that have Vista and Stuck with it.

Learn how to properly maintain a computer in a "Windows" environment and maybe you won't have these "problems" that...........most others just aren't having AND that none of us 'experts' are having either. Remember, Windows is essentially Windows. If the printer says "vista compatible" and you can't get it to install then please revert back to my original statement of "learn how to properly maintain a computer in a Windows environment". Otherwise, TAKE A CLASS AT YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE!

Hmm, I think I will just stick with XP. It gets the job done. I wouldn't be surprised if this service pack causes more problems for people.

And Vista is bringing the "computer guru wannabes" out into the open. Give your buddy the gift of a one semester paid class in imtermediate pc troubleshooting in a Windows environment and maybe he'll then learn how to use USB peripherals.

Good man! Wouldn't mind having you in the circle of friends. You are cool! Too bad for the prevailing of Sony. Prices going up up up and probably no sign of decline. R.I.P. HD-DVD. DF looks to be sticking around for a little ...................kinda like radiation after a nuclear explosion ..............killing everyone off. HA HA HA I'm guessing that you know what I think you know.

funny, i properly maintained the first pc i owned without windows.
no classes, just the dos manual the guy gave us with it.
seems windows was supposed to be easier than that.
every other version i've used certainly is.

local community college could certainly teach me how to fail with vista.
printer works fine with laptop running xp,
so i downloaded vista drivers, which didn't work.
tried a complete uninstall/reinstall with said drivers,
also did not work in any way.
contacted lexmark, a company i had already stopped buying from;
they got me to do both the tings i'd already done again,
which of course was a massive failure of epic proportions.
then i had to go home, so i told my cousin to keep hassling lexmark,
unless sp1 just so happens to fix the problem.

thanks to the other commenter, the one offering actual advice...
i had the aero theme disabled after vista informed me it was possible
(keep in mind this is after ~2 years of operation without the message)
and also disabled some kind of taskbar animations.
it did dramatically drop use of ram,
considering how explorer/dwm doing nothing was using some kinda 60mb.
