I was on ebay and noticed that there are alot of PS3's on sale with a deffective hard drive for sale in the low $100's.

Is it possible to just install a hard drive, such as the one from your computer, and install the necessary firmwares to that hard drive and make the PS3 work perfectly fine?

If so, do any of you know how I can do this?

Thanks

By "your computer" do you mean a laptop? If your actually referring to a desk top PC HDD then no. The PS3 will only take 2.5" SATA Lap top HDD

There's an adapter for installing 3.5" HDD to the PS3. Search for it. Here is a bit more info.

Just pop in a new 2.5" HD and when you turn the ps3 on it will detect a new HD, it will then install the lastest firmware that was on that ps3 before the old HD crapped out.

I put a 160GB in mine, was up and running in about 2 min's.

If a larger HD is added to the PS3 does it have over heating problems or need a larger power supply? Thanks

No.
You and your ps3 will be just fine.
I've had my 160 in for over 3 months now, never had a problem.
Just keep it in a well ventilated area, but you should be doing that anyway.

Peace

I can't really rember if they will still be there or not, But I would lean toward yes, since you would make a backup of your saved games before you switch over the hard drive.

There is a backup tool under settings on your ps3. You will need to have a flash drive in order to utilize it.
