Okay...I've been contemplating building a media center PC to stream HD video (MKV files) to my HD Projector, but had an idea that a PS3 may be a better way to go. Is anyone else doing this??

Questions :

- Can I connect the PS3 to my home network (802.11g) ?
- Will XP see the drive on the PS3?
- Can I copy my MKV or converted MKV to MP4 from my PC to the PS3 and stream it?
- I know it's possible to hook up external drives to the PS3 if it's formatted in FAT32.....does it have a size limitation on files? HD movies are typically 5 gigs......problem??

I think this is all possible............if so, I'll get one....

Suggestions guys??

Thanks

Hello dssking, I hope this helps...

- Can I connect the PS3 to my home network (802.11g) ? I can't answer that with 100% certainty as I have no interest in networking my PS3 but my guess is that it can be done. Anyone else have a definite answer?

- Will XP see the drive on the PS3? No, the PS3's HDD drive is formatted with a proprietary file system. Windows can not recognise it.

- Can I copy my MKV or converted MKV to MP4 from my PC to the PS3 and stream it? From the PC to the PS3? Yes, as long as the included streams are compatible. From PS3 to PC? No.

- I know it's possible to hook up external drives to the PS3 if it's formatted in FAT32.....does it have a size limitation on files? HD movies are typically 5 gigs......problem?? Yes, external media have a 4GB limit. That is a restriction of the FAT32 file system. However the PS3's internal HDD does not have this limit as it is not formatted in FAT32.

Hmmm........Okay. What if I replace the drive in the PS3 (say a 40gig PS3) with a 500 gig? This solves the 4gig limitation......but then the question is now are the files copied from the PC to the PS3?

dssking, I already stated that the PS3's internal HDD does not have a 4GB limit. You can copy media files over from DVD's. I have a couple files that are about 8GB each on my PS3 at the moment. I copied them over from dual layer DVD's.

Make sure if you upgrade your HDD that its 5200rpm 2.5" sata drive.
You can connect your PS3 to your home network as i have.
Using TVersity you can stream all your photos, music, movies (compatible format) from your PC to the PS3.
Also use TVersity to copy to your PS3,s hdd.

^ or even better install this:
HTS722016 160GB, 7200rpm with 16mb buffer by Hitachi.
140euros more or less.
Personally i have seen some difference especially at DMC4 loading time and for some that say that this disk make noise, thats not truth.
You wont find anything faster at 2,5". Except the SSDisk's that with the same amount of money you get 32gb.

Anyway,
About the Media center here is my set up.
I got this external box for something less than 30euros

Link More Info Here
+200euros for a seagate 1TB 32mb cache(i also had a spare 120gb) i ve placed them both to the box and they work fine.

The good news is that you just cant run out of space (theoretically), cause you can add another 1TB disk to the same box.Thats 2TB!

The bad news is that it does make some noise,
Bad news No2 if you make the mistake to add many files to a single folder it may take years till PS3 reads them all but that can be managed.

About the 4gb limitation...just split the videos, i dont think that a 5 second pause is that much of a deal.
Even tho that i havent updated yet, i think that 2.20fw supports Video Playlist, if thats true, that solves the 4gb prob for me.

Good HDD but unfortunately it has been reported that HDD's used with the PS3 that have speeds higher than the PS3's stock hard drive (5400rpm) cause problems.

Just out of curiosity what is the buffer size on the stock PS3 HDD?

What rpm's had to do with compatibility? i am not an expert but it sounds weird.
Till now i haven't faced a prob.
That this HDD may corrupt faster than a 5400rpm disk, i accept that and to tell you the truth i am afraid of that.
But what the hell, except the saves that can be backed up easy, i dont care for the rest of staff.
One more thing that i haven't mention...Only 1 year warranty.That Sucks.

Including PS3 disk all the 2,5" sata disk have 8mb buffer.

When i went to buy the disk i saw this

BUT ...hold your breath...

16GB = 275euros!!!or 316$!
FFS i bought 1TB with less than 200 euros.

Well solid state drives are the future, but its kinda odd that they cost more per gig than memory cards considering they are essentially the same thing with a different interface.

Check out this bad boy: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/peripherals/a...-day-231693.php

It is hot no doubt, i would like something like this to my PS3.

Sudds,

So, if I run Tversity and convert my MKV's to VOB's or a format that the PS3 can read, can they be read from my PC's harddrive, and streamed to the Ps3? Or can they be then copied to the PS3's drive and played right from the PS3 to my projector?

From reading all of the postings in various places, it would seem that Tversity is the way to go.....I think.......... Your thoughts?

What I want to do is very simple. I download MKV files...typically 5 gigs in length. Convert either to MP4 or VOB and play.......whether it be from my PC's drive, or the PS3's drive..... I'll upgrade the drive to get around the 4 gig limit on externals.... Will this solve my issue?

We've found that Tversity is easier to use, and alot more customizable, though I know there are quite a few people on here who use wmp11 to stream their stuff.

What I am planning to stream would be MKV files. 720p HD movies are typically about 5 gigs. Downloading MKV files are very common now and from reading here, isn't a problem to convert to VOB (minutes, rather than hours).

I think I'll be picking up a PS3 in the near future. The bonus, of course, is the game system and the Blue-Ray player. Since I have my Driving Force Pro wheel from the PS2, it'll work with GT5 upon release...yet another plus.
