Does anybody know what the maximum bitrate is through an optical cable is for audio?

I might be going deaf but on a movie I have the 640 kbps AC3 track sounds very similar, almost the same as the 1509 kbps DTS track. The display does say AC3 640 kbps and DTS 1.5 mbps.

im pretty sure if you want anything higher than Dolby Digital 5.1 standard - then you need HDMI not optical!

Actaully I already found the answer, but thanks. The maximum bitrate throughput for optical and coaxial is 1536kbps.

DTS 1536kbps. Only achieveable through Blu-Ray/AVCHD format. Keep an eye out for a new thread from Ryu77, he is going to put out an easy how to for mini Blu-Ray creation. Seriously it's not that hard, just do a little research, all of the tools to do this you can find on this site.

If m2ts is your style then AC3 640kbps... obviously DTS is far more superior. Much easier to put together too.

True, but the audio will not play when in m2ts.
