so i switched my ps3 on the other day and tried to boot cod4, but came up with an error saying it couldnt read the disc. i've never even heard of a ps3 disc read error so thought it was strange. i rebooted and tried again with no luck. after several attempts it finally read the disc. i tried once again about an hour ago to play cod4 but the same thing happened, only this time the disc icon doesn't even appear and no noise comes from the ps3 after inserting the disc. i've been switching off and inserting different discs for about the past hour now and still nothing works, not even a dvd (even dvd's worked yesterday). can anybody help?

btw, i installed v2.3 about 2 days ago so not sure if this has anything to do with it. also, i have not modified my ps3 in any way.

cheers

Currently on my 7th PS3 and 4th Xbox, gotta love technology..

I'll suggest that you to take it back to sony, i dont think that anyone can help you.
As you said you have tried all type of discs, so 101% something is wrong with the PS3, IMO dont risk it, just give it for service.

:( omg thats not what i wanted to hear

1 more question - i'm on the 3rd prestige on cod4 and for those of u that play will know it takes time to get through the prestiges, so if i got a new ps3, would i be able to re-create my current PSN account on a new machine and still be at the 3rd prestige?

thanks

sorry I cant help you to that cause i dont play COD4.
But i dont think that the machine matters, i believe that your PSN ID is what matters.
If you take it for service, ask them, it is their job to know.

sounds like your laser has died. And don't worry about your PSN its stored on sony's database (same like email accounts) - just remember your pass and username.

Fat PSP: 3.03 oe-c (will update when i have time :P)

sorted!

just rang sony 10mins ago, and within 2 minutes of speaking to them they offered to send a replacement console by tuesday. didn't ask alot of questions though, which could mean this is a well-known problem that sony is trying to keep quiet.

anyway, thanks for your help, and thanks sony :)

Back in the days of the PS2 i burned through a laser about every 2 months. I think they covered it untill the slim ps2 came out. Just keep talking to the reps at sony about it and they should cough up a new laser. They even paid for my shipping every time. Another way if the laser still works and you aren't going to pay is to take it apart and clean the dust out of the inside and wipe off the laser. that always worked on ps2 but not sure about the ps3 so i'de research it more if it came to that

well if ur ps3 read disc's 1 day & the next it didnt the i no exactly what u done. u must have turned it off by the back switch at a point where ur ps3 was readin the disk. i have read about this on some websites & they say DO NOT TUNR YOUR PS3 OFF BY THE BACK SWITCH UNLESS U HAVE TO! the obvious reason is it will corrupt the drive. so lesson to everyone dont turn it off by the back switch until the console has fully powerd down.
