onboard sata and flashing qs

Hi lads
Been a long time since i got back into the console scene. I have finnished reading tut book and threads on xbox 360,
just wondering if anyone can tell me if this will work, i'm gonna try it tomorrow when i buy a xbox360 for my son.
I have this mother board with onboard SATA controller

if someone doesn't mind spending a couple of ticks to confirm - i'm a non techy with motherboards etc. It would be fantastic.
I'll buy it tmrrw and hope for the best when it comes to what drive i get!

im not that knowledge able with motherboards and all, but from my looks i would have to say no. Im not sure though. If you want you can just by one for cheap. Fifteen dollars max. as for your drive just pray its not the new one or the hitachi 79.

That's fairly similar to my Motherboard. It worked for my Hitachi 49 (or 47 can't remember which), but I don't know as if it'll work for the newer Hitachi's. I know that the Samsung and Benqs need the VIA chipset, so I think your best bet is to pick one up as the older Hitachi's are no longer being sold-and if you're a smart shopper you won't pick up the Hitachi 79.

it will work for the hitachi, but u would be better off investing $9 on a VIA VT6421 PCI SATA card. so u dont have the chance of bricking your drive..

I have an nforce4 sata chipset mobo and it works great with BenQ's and my hitachi 47DJ. I have also flashed 1 samsung ms28 with it as well (I hear it's impossible with the ms28). The samsung was a bit of a pain, but it did work.
Not sure how it works with the ms25 or the other hitachi's because I haven't had any to try.

Just for safeties sake I wouldn't suggest flashing anyting other than Hitachi's with an onboard chipset. It may work with no problem, but there do seem to be a lot of issues with people using them, seems to be a crapshoot and totally dependent on your Motherboard. Just throwing it out there.

You may be right, who knows.
I think the crapshoot falls in the person doing it. Maybe not understanding or following the instructions correctly. Just throwing that out there. :p
But I do agree though. It would probably be best the get a via sata card for the most part. I won't until I run into a problem with other drives.
BTW: flashing the ms28 with the nforce4 chipset was alot like flashing a benq. Just had to figure it out and everything went great.

Thanks guys well i was lucky my mate worked at the shop so he ejected the tray to make sure no hitachi, I got a Phillips benq model no VAD6038 which is covered in the tutorial, on a note on the tut - Thanks to whoever wrote it, so far i followed it patiently and logically and had no probs.
So i need to get a via chipset pci card, no probs they are about 40 nzd, will try get one today.
Also not sure about this dvd writer, i asked the shop assistant for KREON dvdr and he didn't have a clue.

Hey again :)
ok just realised that my main pc (used for home stuff) has a pioneer 111d drive.
Getting confused
is this what still is recommended to use? I gather firmware needs update, but i dont need to open it up or anything do i?
i gather from reading that i can use xbox360 backup prog and imgburn to backup my games? no opening dvd unit cover and swapping etc?

your 111d will work fine for burning, just update the FW for it via pioneers website, the newest is still 1.29 i believe. as for your kreon drive, it is just a dvd-rom, so it only reads dvds, it cannot burn them. also you will only find these on ebay as they are no longer made. however, there are several options for the kreon drives, the most used one is a shd-162c which is an IDE drive, however, there is a sata version of it, and there are two other newer samsung drives that can be flashed with the kreon fw, just google them to find out what they are.
as for flashing your benq, you will need the PCI sata card that has a chipset of 6421 on it. otherwise you will more than likely not be able to do it. the card is cheap, and well worth it. as for steps for flashing your benq, here is what i do and it only takes about 5 minutes from taking the case apart to putting it back together.
step 1: put USB stick into USB slot
2: open up iPrep
3: load firmware definition (1.4.1)
4: select drive letter from drop down box
5: hit make bootable
6: shut down computer
7: deassemble 360 and hook the dvd drive up to the PCI card
8: turn computer on, boot off the USB stick
9: follow command prompts (it will put the orig.bin on the USB stick after you run the dben 1234567 12345 command.)
10: shut down 360 and computer and restart into windows
11: open up Firmware toolbox and make sure the FW it dumped is a legit one. if so move on, if not do as i said before to copy and paste a legit key in it.
12: restart computer and boot off the USB drive.
13: follow command promts and run the fben 1234567 12345 command to erase/flash the drive with the 'hacked' firmware.
14: shut down 360 and computer
15: put a burnt game in it to make sure it plays.
16: if it plays, put 360 back together
17: if it doesnt play games, see if it will play original games then restart computer off the USB drive, hook 360 back up and run the rben 1234567 12345 command to restore it to original shape. and start over.
hopefully that answers your questions, and if you run into any problems, just let us know.

didn't see youre post when i added reply :), Got a sata card with via 6421a chipset, dvd+r dl Verbs of course, picked up a 115d dvd writer pion - was on special 29 NZD :)
will be doing this know

its been hours....
i cant load the benq ixtreme 1.41 to load
it says not valid firmware, any ideas will check back after i try make sense of it

Alls good, was frustrating but thats only cause i didn't read properly even though i did ???
flashed the drive, success all the way, tested orig, all good :)
Bit confused on the reading side of things, got my orig of ridge racer 6 and tried imgburn, etc but realise somethings not right. it only reads for like 30 secs to make img?
I am obviously missin sumthin, pioneer 115d, not firmware update done, do i have to do the swap thing to make an image as per tut?

are you trying to rip the game? i doubt you'll be able to do that in a pioneer 115d. you either need to do the hotswap trick where you load a large DVD and use the emergency eject button and put the game in, or you need to get a kreon drive or one of the 360 drives that can rip games.

thx slim - i was dreading that.
I've looked through my orig dvd collection and the biggest is 7.1G :(
I've read the tut again and again and it made sense - hotswap is what i need to do. No probs, bought the 115d specially for it.
Last few3 Qs
Once i do the hotswap i read about merging, ss bin files etc
here goes.
Do i need to dwnload some sort of patch for the backup before i burn?
tried searching for bin files and it took me to another few hour journey to land str8 back here.
Appreciate everyone help.

I see this is a bit late, but yes, same as yours. Nforce4 sata chipset. I have flashed several benq's (iprep101 v006), hitachi 47dj, Samsung ms28 (dosflash16) and I just did a ms25 today (dosflash16). No need for the via6421 sata card....for me at least.

no probs mate, i setup a second pc for experimenting, just paid 100 for a new samsung flashed drive of a mod co. so should be able to test soon. I've got a 5 yr old who doesn't no the meaning of careful with the discs, so backups will be great.

you got screwed if you paied 100 for the kreon drive, they are only like 60 on ebay still. and if you still of a large movie, gladiator is a good one.

hi mate yeah paid 100 new zealand dollars so just a little over 60 us i guess.
I first Tried to do it on the cheap but time vs ripped off calculation then m still ok with it as it wouldve taken me a few hrs to find one, flash etc so thought just payfor one new, pre flashed etc. - never thought i'd be paying 100 for a dvdrom LOL. Most local retailers don't carry them. and i'm imaptient to buy from net.
