If the subtitle box is unchecked, then subtitles will NOT be written to your DVD.

some DVDs have forced subtitles that may be what you're running into

I've been having a similar problem. On some of the backups of my DVDs whenever I start to watch it the movie will start with the subtitles turned on. I just go to the subtitle menu and turn it off and the movie then plays fine. But it is annoying, to say the least. Is there anything I can do while making the backup to stop this from happening? I usually make a backup of the full disk rather than just the movie. (I will only do the main movie if it puts up a struggle. LOL!) Here are the steps that I usually take to make my backups.
1. Rip it to the HD using DVDFab HD Decrypter or AnyDVD.
(If one doesn't succeed, the other one will)
2. Run it thru FixVTS.
3. Run it thru DVDShrink, removing any foreign language audio.
(a) Depending upon the amount of compression DVDShrink wants to
use, I will backup and run it thru MenuShrink.
4. Burn to disk using Imgburn.
Using these steps I haven't had any major problems making backups of any DVD that I own.

try choosing the 5.1 channel audio instead of the 2 channel audio and see if that makes a difference in the subtitles

Tried your suggestion but without success. I'm going to try the disk on a different DVD player. I'm beginning to suspect that it might be my DVR that is the problem.
