streaming Blueray movie .MKv on PS3

hi i have a blueray movie of my friend on my pc. its a file with the extension .MKV i have tried all sorts off programs to convert it so it can work on my PS£. im currently streaming my HDD throught media player to the PS3. Most of the .avi and .mpeg files seem to work. i did convert the .mkv to .avi but it didnt play. said the usual file not supported. can any one help or advise me on what to use.

i have the 60Gb US Version PS3
Get a program called tsMuxeR.
1. Load your mkv.
2. There should display 2 streams, audio and video. Highlight the video stream.
3. If the AVC level is higher than 4.1 change it down to 4.1.
4. Select the m2ts radio button.
5. Start muxing.
Now you have a m2ts file fully compatible with the PS3, it is also streamable, not sure if media player will stream it though, I use Cyberlink Media Pro to stream.

hi yes it worked :) your a legend. i used the the cyberlink media and it sorted it. i relised after that when i looked at the media player file types that it wasnt there and clicked lol that it wont play it :D. Cheers mate

Good to hear. FYI, with the m2ts extension there is no file size restriction, no need to split.

My method was as follows :
I used MKV2VOB. You're not reencoding. Choose the MKV file, and hit ADD. It will convert it to an MPG file which can be streamed either through MediaPlayer 11, or TVersity (Both of which work amazing). It took 10-12 minutes for this process (4.5 gig file)

I believe with that method you would be limited to the 4GB size, am I not correct?

I'd like to do the same thing except my movie needs subs, does TVercity support subtitles? Or would I still have to hardcode the subs into it?

Subs are a no-go in m2ts, you'd need to hardcode.

you can also stream it through Windows Media 11 by muxing it to .m2ts through TsMuxer and then just rename the extension .mpeg after that and you're good to go...

Is it true that Windows Media Player 11, Tversity, and Cyberlink would all provide the same file support when streaming to the PS3? As in each will have the same type of files that work and don't work.

Not neccesarily;
Cyberlink: See's m2ts but the PS3 display's as mpeg2... until on the HDD.
TVersity: Does not see m2ts---> rename as .m2t.
Media Player: Does not see m2ts---> rename as .mpeg.

do you rename it before you convert it or after the conversion, cause when i try to rename the file to m2t before i convert the dot shifts from m2ts to ts in the output selection

which program you using? is its tsm* then u just convert it and goes from .mkv to .m2ts

you got to have a .mkv file and then load it up in tsmuxer then just change to m2ts and select the audio to 4.1 then press start convert it should place a new file where you have the saved file already. if thats what your asking mate.

For PS3 to play an "m2ts" file you need to change it to "m2t" so that TVersity can recognize it.

I am streaming several movies using Windows Media 11 and they "judder" like no tomorrow. Is this because some of the movies are nearly 8gig? Anyway to make the streaming seamless?
They have been converted to M2ts files.

For even better playback you can copy the movie to the PS3 HDD instead of streaming. You can do this via your home network, I use Cyberlink... I've never tried it with WMP11

EDIT: Your PC is more than powerful enough to stream.
WMP11 isn't the greatest from h264 playback, I suggest having your codecs up to date. Install CCCP, haali media splitter. Also, if you can get WPM11 to play h264 files and the PS3 to accept the connection from WMP11 you should copy the file to the PS3 HDD, rather than streaming. With m2ts there are no size restrictions on the PS3 HDD.
