a few weeks ago i made a thread asking if out of a certain selection of hard drives which should i get. I got zero responses so now for a different method of attack. Has anyone here installed a new hard drive? what size/make was it? any problems in load times/copying times etc?
Or in just general which hard drives are best avoided or have a good reputation?

yea, i just checked out that hard drive. i could never see myself paying that much for that. i care more about capacity, not how rugged it is. I dont plan on throwing my PS3 off a cliff anytime soon.

You can put any laptop SATA Drive that you like, but...
1. 250 GB is the max (RUMORED)
2. 5400 RPM is recommended for heat considerations
I have a 200 GB Western Digital Hard Drive in mine, 5400 RPM, works like a champ.
It really is ridiculously easy to upgrade. Make sure you back up your game saves.
Can anyone confirm the 250 GB limit?

Solid state isn't only about ruggedness, it's about seek times. Putting one in a PS3 would make the load times almost non existent. Solid state will be the future of hard drives but they're too expensive right now to be worth wile to consumers.

I have a 320GB in my PS3. Formatted it comes to 298GB. Therefore the 250GB rumor is just that: a rumor.
This is the one i got:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...:MEWN:IT&ih=005
It took less than two minutes to swap out the 60GB for this 320GB.
The ps3 does not get quicker load times with a 7200RPM drive, so don't waste your money on one. I never thought about the extra heat of the 7200RPM. Perhaps the firmware will only let the drive spin up to 5400RPM. That may explain why there is no gain with a 7200RPM drive.

Put a 160/gb seagate in mine, no problems what so ever.
Backed up data from orginal drive, popped in the new one, done in less than 5 min's.

unless your connecting an external drive via USB, 320 is the biggest 2.5 inch drive available currently... they don't make 500GB's in 2.5" yet..

Hi guys, i'd like to update my 60gb and 40gb like the rest of you guys.. I'm going to go with a 250gb 5400rpm drive but i have a question about formatting the drive.. After you install the hard drive do you just use the format option on the PS3 menu??

That's what i did. Just installed the drive, turned it on, and the PS3 prompted to format the drive.
Why not pony up the extra $40 and get the 320GB drive?

Size is normally irrelevant unless the formatting has a capacity limit, which I don't think is the case here.
