My PS3 is doing pretty well, actually it is brand new and waiting for me to pick it up when the price drops to $300-$350. Too bad i just have it sitting on the shelf, o well... one day i will use it.

Just a quick rule of thumb, if you throw it against a brick wall, it probably won't work.
Yes, I am kidding, but I was expecting a reply with something along those lines: "Mine sucks. It doesn't work anymore! I only dropped it from my 3rd floor window. WTF?"
Seriously speaking, is that blu-ray reading problem common? At some point, I will start to amass a blu-ray collection. But, as I said, so far, I've had no read issues. All my original DVDs, backups, etc., are all read without any problems.

They were very common around the 2.00-2.17 firmware period, the problem seems to have been fixed for the most part.
My theory is that Sony had probably gave the bluray laser more juice for whatever reason (possibly because of the upcoming BD profile 2.00 they thought it was necessary) and it started burning out people's bluray drives. Then they had to figure out to what level they could run the laser at without breaking it and thus the 2.17 fix.
But of course this is all speculation as Sony refuses to take responsibility for the laser burn outs even though they clearly did something to cause and fix it through firmware updates.

My launch US 60 gig is still working! The memory stick slot is a bit messed up though but it was like that out of the box..it's like indented upwards so it's hard to get stuff out of the front slots. And it occasionally freezes in the web browser but other than that it's awesome! I'm going to be getting GTA IV for it this week ;)

My 80 GB ps3 is still running fine after buying it 8 months ago. I fold @home a lot on my ps3. It runs as fast as a supercomputer. I waited too long to get a ps3 because by the time I got mine the 60 gig was more expensive.

Just wondering.
Did you hardboot the ps3 or did you turn it off from the power switch at the back when it froze?

Well had my ps3 about 3 weeks and the blu ray drive died on sunday while playing gta. I did a little looking about it and seems to be a real problem. I called sony and the guy before I even give him the serial asked was i the 40g yeah, seemed to me he was aware of it. Better to replace god knows haow many faulty drives are out, than admit there is a problem with them. Needless to say they are replacing it. Lets hope this one does not fall to fate as the last, also I hope they send me a new one rather than a repair job which they seem to do.
