For all having heat issues, turn it off from the back and turn it on while holding the eject button to initialize a fan speed test or w/e, it will blow all the dust out.

I love the reliability of the PS3. The PS2 had its turn for the XBox fanboys laughing at the DREs, now if we laugh at their RRODs they get all personal and go cry up in their rooms and bring up stupid arguments of how the PS3 gets so hot and how the PSN network sux and nobody plays. I personally can see the PS3 lasting longer than the 360.

Bought mine at the end of february and the drive stopped reading all discs so sony is sending me a box to ship it off either get repaired or new one.. I think the motor to the blu-ray drive over-heated I got a 40gb if that mattersand we ran it all night playing gt 5 prologue then it froze and never played a disk again, even after full restore. Gotta watch it's temp that's for sure and after system update I heard from a tech that it's important to restore system defaults or it can start to function improperly..

Purchased one of the very last 80GB MotorStorm bundles on March 21st, 2008 and it's sailing smooth. It only froze once while playing COD4 online, though I was running the game for about three hours so I kind of expected something to happen.

Bought my 40g about 5 months ago, it worked great up until 3 and a half months ago. Every time I put a game in or signed onto the network it wanted me to download the latest update. It seemed like I was going from old to new and then back to older versions all the time. Then one day it wouldn't read any disks any more. Completely disgusted with the piece of cr-p. Finally just ordered a new lens for it, hope it works. If not it will be up for sale with 5 controllers and 5 games here on the site soon.

Dude, your PS3 is still under warranty. If you didn't open it, just give Sony a call, they'll fix it for free!

i bought my ps3 used for 300 ...it works as new ..no problems at al, the console was bought in januray 2007 ...when i bought it it had 1.60 and i upgraded it to ...now its 2.41...but im feleeng bad because maybe it was a bad thing to do...it is a much more recent FW so i gues it will be much harder to downgrade/hack to a much waited CFW ...
PSP = CFW 4.01 M33-2

I had a 60GB that worked for about 6 months. After it broke I got an 80GB and that's been working fine for about a year now.

Sell your 60GB online. You can generally make a good amount even though its broken. What was wrong with it?

60 gig from June 2007 and the blu-ray drive just died last night before I even got to play Battlefield Bad Company - not the first time, just last night and now all my games are coasters.
Not pleased.

Call Sony, I believe some 60GBs have extended warranty because they are known to fail.

Thanks, unfortunately I called them and they offered to fix it for $150 and 3-4 weeks. That's not gonna happen.

Replacing the Blu-Ray laser by yourself then?

If that's the problem then yes. I believe it's the motor - whatever it is, it'll either be fixed or broken by the time I'm done. :-)

Its not the motor... the the system has to verify that there is a disk present first, it will not spin the motor until this happens.
A new kes400a is only $60 shipped all over the net. Don't throw it a way or break it/fix. Just google it.

Thanks for the advice. I googled it, looked at all of the entries on AfterDawn.com and ordered the kes400a. I am sooooo happy not to be sending the money and my PS3 to Sony. I'm looking forward to replacing that puppy and getting it working again. It's apart and still working so I can play the demos and PSN games while I wait for the part to show up.
I'll let you guys know how it all works out. I should get it in a week or two max. Thanks everyone!
Peace.
