CompuAppps SwissKnife V3 Partition Utility
Partition Magic
Partition Expert

Now I have no idea if that'll work or not to be honest. I've never done it myself, so if the existing files will remain intact.... your guess is as good as mine. I take it you don't have any space elsewhere (other HD) to back up the files?

** If not, let me know. I think I have a spare HD kickin' around I can run a couple tests on for you.
I've been meaning to try this out for a while, I finaly got around to it... Great news!!! It worked.

Using a full version of Partition Magic I was able to set up a partition on my 320GB external HDD (270GB & 50GB), I then was able to format the 50GB section to FAT32, once again using Partition Magic. I tested it on my PS3 and it works fine, it only recognizes the FAT32 portion... which is the whole point.

I did this for pretty much one reason, to watch the main feature from a Blu-Ray disc before I decide to compress and archive.

I used tsMuxeR to remux a ripped BD back to Blu-Ray using the split feature (3.5GB chunks). To do this remux back to Blu-Ray, make a folder called AVCHD... place the BDMV & Certificate folders in the AVCHD folder, you then need to use a handy application called AVCHD-ME. Just place the application in teh AVCHD folder and run it, it takes one second.

After that place the AVCHD folder on the external FAT32 partition, plug into the PS3, press X on the USB icon, then X on the AVCHD folder.

How AVCHD-ME works, it renames the files within the BDMV folder and thus tricking the PS3 into thinking a USB drive is a BD.
I had played with tsMuxeR before for creating AVCHD discs with DVD-Rs but the AVCHD spoofing via a FAT32 drive was new to me. That was fun!

However, when I first read this it made me think that I could remux or re-work a pre-existing AVCHD directory to just split the main m2ts file to a smaller size. In other words, it would keep the menu, other M2TS files and any other special features.

However, it seems like tsMuxeR can only take that one main m2ts file that you choose and make a brand new BDMV and CERTIFICATE directories. In other words, you can't keep the original menu it seems or any other special features.

Mainly I just want to verify from you guys if this is your experience?

Also, when dealing with subtitles from a pre-existing BDMV directory, do m2ts files have those subtitles muxed into themselves or are they in a separate sub-directory of the BDMV folder? I don't have any pre-existing BDMVs with subtitles to test but I am interested nonetheless for future hacking.

My other question would be, if dealing with subtitle-less BDMV directories, what is the point of spoofing an AVCHD disc via a FAT32 drive and going to the trouble of splitting the files when the PS3 can streaming or download M2TS files from its internet browser?

For example, I had a BDMV directory whose main M2TS file was 17GBs in size.
I was able to do two things with it:

From the PS3, I went to the internet browser and pointed it over to my desktop machine (on the same intranet) that has apache web server turned on with the mime.types file set to describe M2TS files in "video/mpeg m2ts ts mpeg mpg mpe m1v".
Back in the browser, I clicked on the link for the M2TS file in question and it started buffering and streaming the file flawlessly (via the Ethernet). No conversion or special software needed. Just a web server on my desktop machine and the PS3's internet browser.

The other option I did from the PS3's internet browser was that I pointed it to my desktop machine and told it to "Save Target" for the M2TS file in question. It proceeded to download the 17GB M2TS file to my PS3's hard drive. Played beautifully after it downloaded and no splitting was necessary.

My true question would be if there is a way with tsMuxeR (or another program) to remux a pre-existing BDMV folder to just split the large files but to keep everything else intact such as the menus, special features, extra M2TS files and the subtitles?

Thanks guys.

why is everyone making this so complicated. especially with the western digital. theres no need to partion or reformat to fat32. its already IN FAT32!!! and there is already VIDEO, MUSIC, and PICTURE FOLDERS in the hard drive. whenever you send movies music or picture over to the hard drive. just open it normally and it will all be there on your ps3. you guys start complicating things and people get lost and star doing dumb stuff like make partions and reformationg to NTFS.

if anyone needs some simple help, contact me!

no it wont recognize it. it has to be fat32. NTFS simply isn't compatible with the ps3. and as far as i know you cant reformat from NTFS to fat32, only fat32 to NTFS.

Anybody know how I can format more than 32 gigs to fat32? It is not possible using Disc Management in Windows. I have heard of people doing it through linux. I have a 1 TB external drive and would like a 200 gig fat32 partition so that I can use USB loader

Windows XP and an app called Partition Magic. I did my 320GB NTFS and created a 50GB FAT32 partition. This app does not work on Vista.

Use Fat32Format, this is your solution.

Just in case anyone is looking through this forum site a year on, if you want to see your folders on an external hard drive instead of hitting the x button to go into the hard drive, simply press triagle, and then select display all, and you will see all of the folders on your Hard Drive.

From my own experience swiss knife was useless because it only created one partition which was a 150GB on my 750GB hard drive. I used a programme called fat 32 formatter which did the job for me. It took a few hours but once it was done it worked perfectly (free programme too)if you want to find it just search for fat32 format or ps3 external hard drive format into youtube and you'll find a really easy video telling you how to do it. I deleted all the partitions using windows xp and then used this program to format it.

You don't have to limit your partitions. Using a 500gb external formatted as RAW in disk manager, used this progam in command prompt as an administrator. Took a couple of seconds to format as FAT32. Sub-folders don't work, but any folder within the designated "Picture, Music, Game, Movie" setup works fine. 500gb (well, 465) of video on the PS3!

For me, the best hard drive formatting tool has always been a Linux Live CD - I've used Ubuntu and Ubuntu variants, but they all come with a Partition Editor that lets you very easily define how much of a hard drive you want to format to what format, and it does it very quickly as well.

Anyway. taticom:

Did you have Swissknife format the ENTIRE drive? I've never used it (I've always used the above method), but there should be an option to format an entire drive or only part of it. Check to make sure you formatted the entire thing and didn't leave half of it unformatted (meaning it's just raw data).

You should move your files off the HDD to a pc or similar, then format the external then move them back. Some people like to have seperate partitions for convinience or the way they organise drives. It's just personal preference.

Does the drive show up on other operating systems? like a mac, pc linux etc? Some drives need to be switched off then on again once they are plugged in.
