Quick question! I have a Maxtor Black Armour external drive and I am trying to connect it to my PS3. When I connect it to the computer it shows 149GB of the 160GB available. It seems there is a hidden partition. I have formatted it to FAT32 but it only formats the 149GB. It is password protected. I know the password because I use it on my computer all the time so thats not the issue. If anyone can help that would be great! Thank You!

There's no separate partition or anything. It's just that people are stupid and have decided to use two different scales to talk about the same thing.

There really are 160,000,000,000 bytes of storage on your hard drive, which is 160 GB. But because of some techno mumbo-jumbo that I'm forgetting, each GB actually equals 1024 MB, not 1000. The same applies all the way down to bytes.

So:

160 GB = 160,000,000,000 bytes

160,000,000,000 bytes divided by 1024 = 156,250,000 KB

156,250,000 KB / 1024 = 152,587.89 MB

152,587.89 MB / 1024 = 149 GB

So you still do have all 160,000,000,000 bytes of storage (a "proper" 160 GB), but it just translates to 149 actual GB.

Read up on it on Wikipedia.

I dunno, hope I didn't confuse you too much. Might've confused MYSELF a bit.

No I fully understand that, no confusion here! That helps tho, but my main concern is how to get it to show on my PS3. I have set up the proper folders on the drive and have tried removing the boot software(just deleting it from the drive) but it still asks for the password when I plug it back into my computer. Any help to get rid of that would be great!

New to this forum... but need your help guys.

I have a 40G PS3 & a Seagate External USB 2.0 HDD. Both are working perfectly for Videos, Pictures & Music.

My question is, can I use this external drive for games & other PSN downloads (Demos, etc.). I've tried to copy all of my saved game data over to the external HDD but it doesn't seem to be able to read the External Drive "in game".

Any idea how to use the external dive for game support?

Thanks!

Hello everyone. I am a newbie to afterdawn but I will attempt a response to most of the questions posted here. First of all the Playstation 3 plays all DivX, XviD, and any other "FourCC" codec. If it is not playing your DivX, XviD etc. it is a problem with the encoding of the file itself. As far as the problem with your drives not being recognized by the PS3:(1) You MUST format the partition you want to use in the FAT or FAT32 file system. (2) If you have two partitions on one[b/] drive then the PS3 will only recognize the partition that is marked active. You can mark a partition active from within Windows (XP or above) by clicking on the Start Button and selecting [b]Run. In the run box type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter. You should get a screen that looks like this. It lists all your disks and partitions.:

You may not be able to see all your disks so make sure you maximize the window. You will notice that I have a removable drive at "Disk 2" that has two partitions. One is for my PS3 transfers [FAT32] and the other is a bootable Windows 7 installation[NTFS]. You can format your partition by Right clicking on a drive and selecting format.

You will get this window:

Select FAT32 as the File System and tick the box that says "Perform a quick format" and click OK. This will format that partition in FAT32. After this you have to make this partition active so the PS3 can see it. To do this just right click on the newly created FAT32 partition and clicking "Mark partition as Active". You will get a warning box:

Don't worry just click Yes (if it was a real problem "yes" would not be the default choice). Now the partition you chose is active. Now create a folder in your newly created FAT32 partition called "PS3". To do this go to "My Computer" and double click on your FAT32 drive. Right click in the empty area where there are usually folders and select New > Folder.

Name it "PS3". Now double click on it and create another folder named "VIDEO". Remember these must be in all caps. Now put whatever video files you want in that folder and plug it into your PS3. I hope this guide helps.

"Sadly, you cannot have folders within folders".??? i believe you can. instead of highlighting the harddrive and pressing X, highlight it and press TRIANGLE then highlight ALL INFORMATION then find the correct folder eg the music folder if you want ur music i also find this way finds all the files in that folder quicker. in my video folder i have files within folders within folders. i have found though my 1Tb hd after formatting is now sitting around 460 gb i used swiss knife any cures as its pretty full and i have alot of other stuff to put on it?? hope that makes sence
