did you change the output source to hdmi, as far as i know its automaticaly set to normal output through original leads. if your using hdmi-dvi youl also need to use seperate cable for sounds and youl have to change the output for this too, so video will out through hdmi and sound through your original leads

I had this problem too. I had a dvi to hdmi connector w/ the sony hdmi cable.
I just made sure the plug was pushed in all the way on the backside of the PS3 and gave it a little giggle and the picture popped up and said that the HD connection had been detected and asked me if I wanted to change settings.
Other than that all I could suggest is to make sure it's off via the toggle on the back and then power it on to see if that helps.
Good luck

Well if it helps out any my setup is,
PS3 60gb
Sony 65" HDTV circa 2005
Monster Brand DVI to HDMI
Sony HDMI cable
Sony composite / av cable for sound.
and like I said when I first hooked it up I got a black screen. Then I messed with it and I saw the screen get all distorted but I could tell it was the part of the xmb where you log in. Then it said it detected an hd connection and went from there.
Good Luck

I think i know your problem , do this. Set up ur component cable and goto system settings then display settings. IT will let you choose what type of output you want to use. Select HDMI and press x, when the screen goes black hit x again. RIght now your PS3 should be HDMI for sure. You can now set your PS3 to output video through the HDMI port. Now hook up your hdmi-dvi cable and you should get a picture. Do this without turning the PS3 off. Hope this helps.

that is the thing i d ont know if i should take the composite cable out or leave it on with the HDMI....i mean does the PS3 have to have sound to start up?? if that is the case i can attach the red and white cable to my home theatre and get sound out...i have no clue at the moment and i just dont have any idea if itz the HDMI problem....any1 know if PS3 supports all HDMI or jus 1.3 cuz my monitor only supports HDMI 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 and i am not sure that is the case....and can the cable be faulty i bought a phillips one from wal-mart for $31

you dont need sound support to turn ur PS3 on. I use HDMI 1.3a but for some reason only SONY HDMI cables and a select few others allow audio. I now use the HDMi for video and the optical port for audio.

When the ps3 is on standby. Hold down the powerbutton for about 10 secs till you hear 2 beeps (or more) this will reset the video settings. You should be able to do it from here.
Hope this helps.
Edit: Ah i see you have sold the hdmi cable... but i think that was your problem^^
Fat PSP: 3.03 oe-c (will update when i have time :P)

yea, i but al my cables from monoprice. HUGE savings, especially when your deal with the prices that gaming companies charge for HDMI. those things cost up to $100 and isnt justified at all.
