I just bought a new SamsungHDTV and a PS3 40GB. I have the PS3 in a cabinet but leave the door open when using it, I've noticed it getting hot in there. I havent heard to internal fan working hard to cool it(which is what I read when they're overheating). After 4 days of minimal use the PS3 kept shutting off, I exchanged it for a new one.
Do you think that happened from over heating?
I plan on installing a computer fan or two in the back of the stand the PS3 is in.
1. Are the USB fans anygood. I dont like using 1 of my 2 usb ports and my wife read they draw power away from the PS3.
2. What computer fan would you guys suggest. I've heard Vantec fans are good..
I have the 60gb and i am thinking really seriously this
Koolance Water Cooled Consoles I just wait for any manufacturer to release a custom PS3 case, cause i want to keep the original one intact, cause the chrome and all that.
I know about the fans made for the PS3 but its still enclosed in a cabinet, so I thought 1 or 2 fans (exhaust) would help draw heat out of the cabinet. I would cut holes into the back of the cabinet, something like this:

yea i got a thought ................
throw that raggy azz dusty cupboard away and get a new one.
i made up this to combat heat its my prototype but going to change it and add a water cooler system to it and run a seperate power line to the wall not the usb in case its sucking to much power from the usb port .
yea i know the ps3 can cool its self but for us here in hong kong its summer 32'c and 99% humidity its hot and its realy peace of mind and dam fun to tweak and create these things your self.
I wouldnt advise keeping your PS3 in a cabinet. It would be best as what was stated to get a way to provide air flow to your cabinet. Even with the cabinet door open, the hot air thats being pushed out of the PS3 is not fully exiting the cabinet. your (new)PS3 will eventually die on you (again) due to not over heating, but a constant higher temp than normal. this lessens the life of your ps3. This lessens the life of any device thats prone to over heating. Best thing to do is keep it out in the open to allow full air circulation of the ps3. Or if you do live in a region with bad humidity like Hong kong and in my case Houston, Texas, then you may want to consider customizing your ps3 to provide a better air flow to keep it as cool as possible. When the fan inside the ps3 comes on, its obvious that it has already gotten to temp thats not safe considering long term use. THe PS3 is built to handle its own heating issues. Dont mean to be sarcastic but Dont beleive Sony made its console to work in a cabinet with compressed hot air. Just think how hot the cabinet gets. THe inside of the PS3 is even hotter at this point............
Just got an idea. Since you want to use a computer fan to keep the PS3 cool...WHy dont you make a vent like in the picture above and mount a pc fan on the outside of the vent to suck the hot air out, just like a pc fan does for the inside of a computer case. Or place it(fan) on the inside of the cabonet and turn the fan around so it will blow the air out. I may jsut try that myself.....
Its still possible that this may not work if you cant get the cabinet cool enough so the PS3 will function normally

that is my idea.
Well I ordered 2 vantec vairable speed fans. I will take temp readings of the cabinet before and after and post results. I will install a switch the turns the fans on whent the door is open..
and we'll see... wish me luck
do you not think that the price we have paid for our ps3 that the thing should be able to keep itself cool enough not to do any damage, has anybody had any probs due to over heating?
