if they`re doing software backwards compatibility on the 80 gig, why can`t they just throw the software onto the 40 gig? or why can't we copypasta it. how would it cost anything to add the software to the 40 gig. how annoying

I thought the sole reason it's not on the 40 gig is because it would increase the price of that particular unit (hence the more expensive tag for the 80 gig). However much it really does increase cost, that's a whole different story, but that's probably why it's not on the 40 gig.

i heard that the 40g has no emotion chip in and the 80g does thats the reason why

That might be it. Sorry, I may have the wrong things crossed.

Luckily, I have my original 20 (even though I don't play any PS2 games lol).

EDIT The only ones to have Emotion were the 20 and 60. Since then, only the 80 has backward compatibility through software emulation. The 40 has neither--at least, according to wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3

and according to me also... the 40 has no backwards compatibility. I got one for about 3 weeks when my 60 crapped out. didnt play a single ps2 game i put in.
