I recently got 2 used 40GB PS3s. One is in working condition, the other will boot up to the menu but won't read a disc. I tried putting the blu-ray drive from the good working ps3 into the one that will only boot to the menu to see if it was just a bad drive, I couldn't get it to read the disc still. Any other suggestions?

Sounds like a busted BD Reader.

I assume "BD Reader" means the blu-ray drive. But how come if System A works fine, and I took the blu-ray drive out of System A, and put it in System B (which doesn't read discs to begin with) it still doesn't read discs, and just for the fun of it, I took the drive out of System B and tried it in System A, and it didn't read. So how come System B won't read even with a known good drive?

PS3 optical drives are married to the main board, same as the 360. To replace the drive, you would have to have the original controller board from the broken optical drive. They make complete laser caddys with the spindle motor and everything, looks pretty easy to replace. About 60 dollars from Hong Kong.

Thats what I was wondering. So in theory... Can I take the controller board off the bottom of the BAD BD Reader and attached it to the WORKING BD Reader that would tell me if its the controller board or the actual reader correct?

You HAve to replace the laser for the bluray drive and it will rerad games and movies again
Side Note PS3+Original Bluray Drive = Good
PS3+ Other Bluray Drive = Bad
There like the ps3 you have to have the drive key in order to change the drive out or swap it for another drive

Thanks again for the reply. I will check into changing the actual laser, doesnt seem to hard, I have had the drive apart and cleaned it with lens cleaner. Do you have any other suggestions to do while I have the PS3 in parts? IE should I put AS5 on the heatsinks?

Ok, 1 more issue. It seems that it will play Blu-ray/PS3 games but if I put a PS2 game or DVD in it, it will spin, and then won't ever read the game.
EDIT: I do have a 80gb that I replaced the BD Lens in. (Just noticed I posted about a 40gb)

Your 80GB won't read DVDs or PS2 games? Sounds like a bad laser or calibration problems. Remember, the PS2 had major calibration problems and needed perfect dot-on calibration to read PS2 games but PS1 games always read. Could be the same for the PS3.

Mine stopped reading any discs. Cleaning didn't work, so I replaced the laser. Now it reads CDs and DVDs, but not BDs.
Any suggestions?

I believe your new laser is also bad. If you can take a working laser out of a working system.
Why is it that I only see 40GB PS3's that break?
