As german site inplaystation.de reports, downward compatibility for the 40GB PS3 will be available this october via firmware upgrade. They talked to a Sony importer from germany who told them, Sony is going to release a new firmware which allows a fully software emulation of PS2 games.

Since Sony announced that they're going to offer downloadable PS2 games in PSN, this rumor sounds believable.

^ i think they wanted to be 100% percent sure that will work + maybe they delay it so they can expand games compatibility list.

Anyway,
this i believe will be the beginning of downloadable PS2 titles from Playstation Store, and after almost *10 years* the End of the PS2.

No, the 80 gig used hardware assisted emulation. It dosent run it off software alone even it needed hardware aids.

The 40 Gig PS3 doesnt have the right hardware in it to play PS2/PS1 backups, so even a software update wouldnt allow it to work, unless they add some installation feature for the games onto the HD and use a emulator software which would be the download

That's exactly what they are supposedly planning, pure PS2 emulation without the need for any hardware assistance.

Is unambiguous not the definition of a fact?

Anyway what I'm wondering is once this emulator comes out would it be possible to examine it with Linux and build a functioning ps2 emulator for the PC?

Yeah that would be nice and does seem possible. I wonder if they will have a tool to convert your PS2 disks to a ROM format to be played by the emulator. (I think its already something like that out but I cant recall at the moment) The same way we all use to do it when downloading ROMS and emulators a couple years back were easier.
I hope they come up with an update that will allow you to play games files from an external hard drive, which will be convenient for some

PS3 firmware is encrypted and so will be emulator (if any).

Well as long as we're talking theoretics would it be possible if/when they find a way to decrypt the PS3's firmwares.
