Not yet that I'm aware of. Look for the media when the dual-layer burners hit the stores.

yeah, it would be worthless at the moment since you couldnt burn both layers anyways.

Hi there. In the place where I live, Bangkok, have recently appeared pirate copies of movies on DVD 9 (before were only on DVD 5); quality is still horrible as the movies are shot from inside the theatre, but this means these guys have found an affordable Dual layer burner? And there are rumours Sony will soon release one; Nephilim you're right: should keep an eye on the media!

You can alter the firmware on a Pioneer DVR106/107 to burn dual layered discs. Although im yet to see any discs on the market.

I have a DVR-106 and am wondering if you have any more information on the firmware modification to burn DVD-9's... Will we be able to use this drive successfully to burn DVD-9's when they are available?

According to a news item on Doom9 a few days ago, a German magazine reported that the burner Pioneer used to demonstrate dual-layer burning actually had modified hardware, not just different firmware, and Pioneer says that neither the 106 or 107 are actually capable of burning them. Of course that could just be PR from Pioneer so they have an excuse to sell you a new burner.

The burner used to burn 200MB of data, 100MB on each layer of a DVD-9 disc, was in fact a Pioneer DVR106 with modified firmware. The burn speed was only 2x though, so maybe that will be the problem with the current writers. Thats why i hope that my 107 with the more powerful laser might do it faster.

If Pioneer did actually tell the German magazine that the hardware was modified, I see no reason to assume that either that claim, or their original one that it used the same hardware are true. In fact, besides that one article, the only proof I've seen that the drive had normal 106 hardware is that it is in the same box, which proves nothing. What does seem evident (once again assuming the German article accurately represents a Pioneer statement) is that they have no plans to release a firmware upgrade for the 106 to burn dual-layer disks, so unless a hacked firmware surfaces to make it possible I doubt the feature will ever be available to consumers. Since I don't personally have the magazine, and couldn't verify the facts if I did (and can't read German anyway), I'm not making claims about its accuracy, just pointing out that Pioneer appears to be denying that it was a normal 106. In any case it doesn't really matter to me since I don't own one. ;)

Not to sure what you are on about a German Magazine. At the Vegas show, Pioneer said to all spectators that it was an ordinary Pioneer DVR106 with a firmware modification. Of course they are very unlikely to release a firmware that will allow it to burn dual layers, but who here actually uses a Pioneer with its official firmware. If you do, your missing out big time.

My DVR-106 has the official firmware v1.08, so I want to know, what would I get by using one of the hacked firmwares? I have yet to see a hacked firmware based on the v1.08 one so i'm kind of wary to try any of the hacked ones...

Hi oriphus,
Just finished burning three coasters using Memorex 4X +Rs with my new A-07 with the 1.05 firmware.
Burned a Maxell OK, Also one of my well used Imation -R/Ws.
Have you seen a list of compatable media for the A-07? You're using Riteks if I remember correctly.
The Memorex worked great in the A-06, I'm a bit suprised they didn't work in the A-07.
Any suggestions?

Mate, i had the exact same problem. Burned a few coasters myself after installing the firmware, was getting a bit annoyed, considering it wouldnt even burn at all at the start. Turned off the computer, went away for a bit, came back started to look at it again and it just started working. Strange...

Hi Oriphus,
I'm still waiting for Pioneer's reply to an E-mail I sent to their Tech support. My A-06 burned Memorex without fail. I'm really surprised that the A-07 won't. The Verbatim, Philips and Imation all burned OK.
I've got 60 or 70 blank Memorex but I don't want to put the 06 back in!
I think Pioneer is coming out with new firmware for the 07 in a few days. Maybe the new firmware will help.
A word of caution (don't do what I did!):
While looking at the intel site, checking out the new processors, I found a download called "Application Accelerator for Intel chipsets". I downloaded it and sure enough, it knocked 5 minutes off my rip times.
So I backed up a bunch of movies to my hard drive, no problem.
Knock on the door...My New A-07 is here!! Rip that old A-06 junk out, put in the new burner, fire up Nero, grab a movie from the hard drive and hit burn!
CRASH! Blue screen, blank screen, blue screen.
Windows reboots itself, recovers from a major system crash.
Removed the Application Accelerator after a couple more crashes, hit burn again and it worked, until Nero errored out after writing the lead in stuff on the Memorex +R.
Coasters I can deal with, big crashes after installing a new drive are something I can do without!

I have had a writer, matshita UJ-810, which will only use DVD-R(W) but it is rated at 17G (able to write D5,D9, D10 or D18 media). It is in my IBM A series laptop. IBM has been selling it for 11 months. No name media is sometimes difficult but Memorex, Verbatum, etc work well. Burns just great using the 321 Xpress and DVD-Cloner II or their provided software.
The only use I have for the D9 is to backup originals longer than 200 minutes, such as episodic series, Simpsons, Sopranos etc.
Only problem is where to find any D9 media. I have found some D10 (dual sided) but to date no D9 (dual layer).
I would hope that other members begin using either D5/D9/D10/D18, or dual sided/layer terminnolgy as it is clear terminolgy.
