I just replaced my stock 20GB PS3 hard drive with a 250GB one. I also purchased an enclosure for my old 20GB so I could use it as an external hard drive.

The upgrade went without a hitch, but XP won't recognize the old 20GB drive. I figured XP would find the drive and would force me to format, but when I plug it in nothing's detected. I can feel the drive spinning within the enclosure so I doubt it's a power problem.

I've tried going through My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management, but it isn't detected there either. I've also tried a program called SwissKnife in hopes it might detect something but to no avail.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

How do you format it when windows won't even recognize it? I ran into the same issue with my PS3's original 40gig. Got the SATA enclosure, plugged it in, the drive spins, windows shows nothing. I can't find the drive anywhere in windoes to even try to format it.

Odd problem, this would mean that as soon as you put a HDD in the PS3 it is useless for anything else. Try using a third party formater like swissknife or partition magic.

Just tried and it still won't find it. Any other idea's? I would love to be able to use the old drive.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Could Sony physically modifying the HDD's before their installation be a possible explanation?

Does it see it in the Bios?

Does the case have its own power source? or is it drawing power from the USB port? If it's drawing from the port there might not be enough power.

It's not the power. It has been run through multiple power sources.

Can't find it in BIOS either.

At this point it's not even needing a drive (especialy since it's only 40 gig) it's more a personal crusade to figure it out.

killalot, the ps3 internal drive is, i think, SATA. and has no jumpers on it because SATA only has one device per channel. EIDE can have two devices per channel.

The reason that Windows will not see your PS3 HDD is because it is formatted with a proprietarian file system unique to the PS3.

To format it you will need to use some Hard Disk management software like Norton Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director.
